That is due to the master being constructed with a thin etched brass outer skin, which allows for the realistic "oil canning" sheet metal effect.  It is on all of the FNS models that represent steel side prototypes.

I had originally said something about express trucks on the C-16 version but that was incorrect. The trucks are not a standard freight truck however but are close enough in appearance that in N scale it really won't matter.

Didn't the Seaboard or some other Southern road have wagon-tops too? Ex-B&O cars by chance?

Seaboard had them but were based on a PRR car not B&O.  Don't ever remember seeing any Southern ones.  Wagontops are strictly a B&O car.

VGN, N&W, DT&I, NP, PRR all had wagon tops similar to PRR designs (maybe others), but not like the B&O cars. MT makes the 50' version.

NP cars were actually DT&I cars. They came with a batch of cars NP bought from that road.

So when you say MT made a 'version', which version? There was nearly 3' door opening difference between the DT&I and N&W cars.

I have no idea which 50' version MTL did but here's a pic:

I've never seen the DTI proto but here's an N&W:

Fine N-scale also does 3 different versions, both 40 and50ft cars, single and double door.  Easy kits to do.

That car is in find shape for being so old.  Was always a pleasure to see then in a train.  Matt is doing some unique cars with the Milwaukee rib sides and now the wagontops.  Wonder what he's got up his sleeve next.  Hopefully the PRR X30 and X31's.

Two body variations also on the N scale Wagontop, because the doors sills are different based on which door (flat or Youngstown) is used.
