Anyone got an opinion on the best paint matches (water based) for the North Coast Limited colours ?

Thanks..........

I had a discussion with Mark Jirousek about this once, since he uses acrylics.  His mixtures were so complicated that I decided to keep using Scalecoat I NP light green and dark green.  With Floquil flat over the top they look too good to worry about my health.  ;)

I like to use Tamiya XF-21 Sky and XF-26 Deep Green.

The NP modeling committee put out a set of Lowey cards at the Tacoma convention in 2008. They were rejigging them last year. I went on one of the paint chip safaris and I think at that time (May) they had all but five colours they were going to release so the re-release might not be so far away. Bryan B might no more. Check the NPRHA store (www.NPRHA.org).

Being the specific Bryan B that Andrew is referring to in this case.  We are at the point of soliciting bids from shops that will mix and spray the colors on the color cards.
These have been thoroughly researched thus will be sent to all major manufacturers to be used as a reference for accurate Northern Pacific paint decoration.
These will be available to the public as Andrew mentioned through the NPRHA Company Store in the very near future.
Additionally, this will be a pretty complete reference for most of the colors used by the NP to include...

Passenger
* Loewy Light Green
* Loewy Dark Green
* Pine Tree Light Green
* Pine Tree Dark Green
* Pine Tree Imitation Gold

Freight Diesels
* Imitation Gold
* Red (Monad, diesel strips)
* Yellow (handrails, steps)

Freight Cars
* Mineral Red (boxcars, cabooses)
* Reefer Orange
* MOW Orange

NP Transport
* NP Transport Dark Blue
* NP Transport Gray

Structures
* Depot Sand
* Depot Brown
* Depot Indian Red
* Depot Bottle Green

Still To Be Determined:
* Locomotive Boiler Gray
* Locomotive Graphite

If anyone has any comments or questions, they can be asked of me or on the NP Modelers Yahoo Group.

I have been waiting for color chips for ages, I'm glad they are coming finally. Then we can all start to experiment with custom mixes to make the correct colors. ;D

Not as long as I've been waiting for that Bay Window hack... ;)

Pud,
I would suggest Tru Color Paints. A very nice paint line that
has a great finish right from the bottle. They have both light and dark
green. There product numbers are TCP-57  Northern Pacific Dark Green
and CP-58  Northern Pacific Light Green. They also have the yellow
TCP-68  Northern Pacific Yellow. I have had very good results from
their line of paint.

Never heard of them but thanks very much for the link. I sent it to my LHS owner to see if they ship to the "the great anti paint nation"... aka Canada.................

They have a distributor in Canada (Inter-Hobbies):

Has anyone tried this with plastic models? The paint is solvent-based and their FAQ recommends cleaning with acetone, which can eat some plastics.

Gary,
I've used their paint on Atlas and Kato shells so far without a problem. What I do when
I spray paint a model is to use very light coats. This should eliminate any "crazing" of the
plastic that could occur if you apply too heavy of a coat. The paint dries very quickly so time
between coats is short. Once you get a couple of coats on the model the danger of "crazing"
the plastic lessons with each coat.
Also my main source for their paint is HighBall Graphics.

RE: True Color... "TCP-74  Western Pacific Green" Which WP green? There were at least two. Same with BN cascade green, there were a couple variations on that. I trust the NP was more consistent?

Bryan B (the 'other' one) - what about the caboose and boxcar greens and reefer silver on that color chart?

Ok; so I really don't want to use the solvent based Tru Colour.... so I'm now up against it to get the light green colour; which, btw looks different in evry picture I see (Morning Sun book alone shows about ten shades due to film, sun, reproduction etc...) and then, just to screw it up completely; I compared a mix I made and drew down to the Walthers NP sleeper I have..............

YIKES !

What colour did they use and, if it's correct then what happened to the pictures in the Morning Sun guide?

Their "dark green" looks to light and yellowish and their light green is olive....

At this point in time I'm going nuts....I can lighten the badger Model Flex NP Lt Green (which is damn near Pullman green) to a reasonable colour but the light green is now a mix of BN green, PC green and Olive.....

Any ideas for a water based light green....... anyone got the number of a good shrink..................? :'(

I really like Rapido's colors!  I sold off my Walthers because they looked so bad next to the Rapido stock.
