You'd be closer by using the Western diner for the GN's, though filling in a few windows would make it a bit more accurate.
Are the pics of the X29s of N scale models or HO? I've never seen these in person and find it hard to believe the N scale models would have separate ladders and grabs, though I'd be happy if they did. I could use some of the CGW cars.
I think you'd find the CGW cars acceptable when they are released.
I would have considered the Amtrak diner if it was painted in Phase III.
I'm going to try and track down one of the Kato 106-011 sets and pilfer the diner from that since it is prototypically correct. I might leave it in the Phase I scheme and weather it, or apply a MicroScale Phase III stripe.Of course, a couple of the six-car sets were on eBay last month and went for cheap. Maybe there will be one in Springfield in a couple of weeks at a reasonable price.

When I first linked to the IM Eastern Diner release page and saw the N&W car illustration I thought that is what IM was basing their car on. It took me a moment to notice the rear vestibule which N&W did not have turns out model is a NYC car. I do think though it will make a better foob N&W stand in and will be already be decorated.
