"Thin sliced" Pink/Blue foam?

Anyone know if the pink or blue foam that you get from Home Despot or Loews comes in a thin format? I'm talking about fractions of an inch? Owens only has stuff listed down to the 1/2", maybe another vendor?

I can't imagine there's much market for insulation that's 1/8" thick -- it would provide so little insulation it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble to install it.

Size are you talking about the panels that interlock? I saw those at HD yesterday
in 1" and 3/4" (two sizes). 2x8 panels for 7.70.

Crapity crap crap.... It'd be nice if they did from a modeling standpoint. I could use it for the base of roads and buildings. I have a large expanse where it would work really well, currently I have the Woodland Scenics stuff in it but being porous it's not rigid enough for my liking.

They have it here in the deep South.  I'm guessing 1/4" thickness.   I have the opposite problem; I can't find anything thicker than 1"!  grrrrrrrrr. >:(

Maybe Gatorboard?

Can be had down to 3/16"

Would seem to make a better base for roads and buildings than foam, IMHO.  But can't do undulating surfaces if that's your goal.  Though apparently they make "Gatorblank" which doesn't have the veneer if the ability to cut with a hot knife and create undulating surfaces is a must.

Yeah, I wanted to be able to shape it by rasp or sanding. Not necessarily with a cutting tool.

If Gatorboard is a bit of a production for what you're doing, don't forget about good old foam core.

Thin pink stuff is available in Chicagoland.  It's maybe 1/8"-1/4" thick and I've seen it used with tyvex on exterior walls before vinyl siding is applied.  It's folded so a package of it has a foot print of maybe 2'x4'.

I saw a product similar to this description at Home Depot last week.  It was 3/8" thick but only sold in a huuuuuuuuge package of God-knows-how-many square feet at a price of approximately $38.00, if I remember correctly.  For this reason, I'm going back to Lowe's for the 1/2" x 4' x 8' sheet that I now need and saw in that store not too long ago.  Hope it's still there.

It's called fan fold insulation.  Used as an underlayment for vinyl siding.  84 carries it, as do most of the big boxes.  You'll get 1000 times more than you need, though.  I'd look for something more readily available in small quantities.

For
modeling 'flatlands' the fanfold is exceptional.  Just enough of a base to quiet a hollow core door, unless you are running unimproved Athearn blue box locos.  Since I prefer thin benchwork when building multi level every quarter inch helps...

How much do you need, as in area? There are quite a few options out there....

The fanfold mentioned above is roughly 1/4" thick. I have used it for building electric park flyer Rc planes until I found a product called Depron. It is used as an underlayment in Europe for in floor heating systems. It is more dense than the fanfold and stronger. It is also available in a few different thicknesses. I have 2mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm thick sheets for building planes but I had to order it from a gentleman in CA that was importing it by the container load and selling to the RC community. The shipping cost more than the foam because of the size and amount of packing he did to make sure it arrived safe. I'm not sure if it is still around but the foam came from DepronUSA.com

Recently Midwest products has brought a very similar product to market they call CellFoam. It is available in 3mm, 5mm and 10mm sizes at most hobbyshops now.

Both the Midwest and Depron product come in sheets roughly 12" x 36". MIdwest also offers 12x12 sheets. Neither is really cheap though. The fanfold is going to be the cheaper route, especially if you can spread the cost between friends. I have used all the foams mentioned and each has it's place. I mainly use the fanfold to build up around the foundation of a building create the drainage slope away from it.

Skip, Is this Midwest product rigid and workable like the pink stuff? When I read the word foam, I think of the black stuff Woodland Scenics puts out which is pretty much useless.

Thanks,
The S.
