So, what in my original message triggered all the jocularity?

Simple. If you don't have an answer, make one up.

I think I'll join the Yahoo NYC list and try there. I'm sure it won't be as fun but will probably feed my more austere needs for knowledge.

We love the car , but if Bob isn't making it a kit I think not too many will attempt it .

Interesting . . .

It is not a Calcium Carbide container since I did find a photo of them

Whatever it is, it would really have to be done in both brass and resin for the container. Any guesses to the Gon length?

To my eye it looks like ~42 feet or thereabouts.

Side trip on the calcium carbide - AHM once offered a "Calcium Carbide Container" car in HO:

Seems the containers are missing from this example. ::)

If I recall correctly, calcium carbide was used as the fuel for miners lamps during the early 1900s. It reacts with water to produce acetylene gas. Note sure whether mines went through enough of it to require rail delivery but it maybe it could go in carloads to a distributor.

Best wishes, Dave

Wow Bob, what a rip-off! The somewhat similar N scale car did have containers of some sort.
