Nice find. Where did you find this? I have never seen this car before but will ask around a bit. I suspect that this is a bunkerless reefer/insulated boxcar (RB series) but you probably knew that already. Seems like the kind of car that someone like Jim Sands would have photographed in MN or Iowa.  There was probably some rule that kept this beer from being exported to Wisconsin . As a kid in the 70s I remember collecting Schmidts beer cans in the Iron Range of MN. They had a wildlife series on the cans, walleyes, bass, northern pike, deer, etc that made fir interesting trading. I also remember that my dad wouldn't buy any of it because it was a Minnesota beer.

As A former collector of beer cans, I beleive that Schmidts of Philadelphia (look closely at this car) is different from the Schmidts that had the wildlife series on the cans.

Definitely Schmidt's ("one beautiful beer") of Phila. Hard to believe there would be enough demand for it that they could ship a box car load somewhere.

When I first got in the shipper side of the business back in '74, my Chessie rep was telling me he had Schmidt's as an account. Schmidt's sent him for a brewery tour with the brewmaster. They stopped and sampled a lot out of the big tank. Said he choked and proclaimed "tastes like ...." The brewmaster simply chalked the comment on the board next to the tank to let the troops know.

Schmidt's best reknown for their signage at Veteran's Stadium on top of the upper deck in dead center field. Last owner ran afoul of the IRS which accelerated their folding.

One is Schmidt, the other is Schmidt's.

Schmidt for a time was brewed in Tumwater, WA in the same brewery that brewed Olympia.
This was a result of the purchase of the Olympia brewery by Pabst.

Pabst later sold this brewery to Miller Brewing and it closed a few short years later.
Shmidt and Olympia as well as another PNW favorite, Rainier Beer are still brewed by Pabst.

Out here in Washington, as minors, Schmidt was always one of the favorite party night beers.
It was cheap and was affectionately known as "Animal Beer" because of the can art and our reputation as hunters and gatherers.

I love the stories and additional knowledge but regardless of which brewery it was, it's a classic example of the 60s era billboard cars which I seem to have a craving for. And since it was for a beer, I thought of Dave. If anyone can help me find a more complete image, I'd appreciate it.

Yup, all this does bring back some good memories of my (mis-spent?) youth. I do believe I still have a box of Schmidt Wildlife series cans in the basement of my parents house!  Going to have to dig those out next time I visit.

Anyway, on the beer reefer theme, didn't Hamm's also have some spiffy cars in the 60's?

Would need to backdate those Athearn cars. Where'd the roofwalks go? Wait, they did both cars in N too! And the Pearl car.

Amazing...I've been looking all over for a color shot of one of the Schmidt's boxcars, and the answer was here on the Railwire all along...now the next challenge is to somehow find out how many were leased by the firm.
