Same here. But this was reprinted from the NSR article. All the same--it's great to have access to such a significant contribution.

The caption on the coal dock photo ("just because you can...") shows that even with these automated tools, it still takes an artistic eye to get them to work.

What is amazing about Rich's work is the sense of cognitive dissonance they instill. You know the photos are miniature scenes, but everything is so realistically rendered and weathered that you just can't believe it.

One other comment about Train Life website idea. Wouldn't it be cool if back issues of all model RR magazines were on line. Could such a venture be ad supported and not require subscriptions?

I think that depends on Kalmbach's willingness to allow it.

I still get a chill looking at that stuff.

Even though I KNOW it's all models (I mean shoot, I have one of them in my basement...), the cognitive dissonance really does set in.

Hear hear!  That NSR write-up was the article of the decade for me.

It was very cool to see Rich's PC boxcar in person (the one in the header image) in Tom's lab last week.

At least the weathering article made that issue worth saving.  Could have done without the silly C&O photos, or that lame version of UP's City of LA...

His photos remind me of Vic Roseman's, which IMO were always the bomb. And Roseman 'cheated' by using on-location and larger scales. Rich wins now, hands down.

BTW, excellent resource that website. MRG had QC issues in its writing and the photos were often way too dark but the aim and depth of its content is sorely missed, again, IMO.

Rich was part of the reason I quit the hobby.

I realized one day, I could spend every minute of the rest of my life and still never produce something 1/100th as good looking as he could.

The entire Hobby felt kinda pointless after that realization tbh.
