Got it.... the more tracks in the mill, the better I always say....the crowded look is very realistic....and heaven knows I've been in a few mills.....

Not so much realism as making it easier to work the paper mill. You need a runaround.

I know that would help greatly but I can't see how to fit it in without doing as was suggested and biting into the main line where it is shown on Guilford's idea. I'm not really sure another mainline switch there is a good idea for both operational and scenic reasosn, but I stand to be convinced............ideas ?

Here's a first draft. Have at it.

The section around the paper mill has the extra passing siding that was recommended. It fits just fine. My own change was to move the switch for the passing siding out of the tunnel in front of the 3-track stub end yard. Not sure about the geometry of the track on the original layout, so this may need adjustment.

Required switches as drawn:

Left turnout#5, 5.98".   7
Right turnout#5, 5.98".   7
Left turnout#7, 5.98".   7
Right turnout#7, 5.98".   6
Left curved turnout 22.5º   3
Right curved turnout 22.5º   2

No; it's the door to an upright freeze that "gets in the way" so that's the sear it covers....

Put it outside .. I thought you get cold up there in the great white north .. at least thats what I saw on Ice Road Truckers :)

Would it be possible to snake some track behind the water heater, then put that peninsula against the other wall?

Yes; we call it the Great White North beer fridge.......aka; the garage for six months....tee hee

The water heater has no space behind it at all and there are some goofy code things about it's location; it's just been put in a year or so ago........

So; can we..

1. Add a storage track to the barge slip; if we have to expand the bulb a few inches that's ok....
2. Add another track to the mill that would run near the scenic divider with building flats on it.
3. Pull back the mill tracks where the shipping warehouse will be located so they go inside ?
4. can we add another staging track; even if it wasn't able to hold passenger consists ?

I think I like it.....what is the turnout arrangement for the staging ? Obviously they will be powered turn outs, what do epople suggest to monitor them. I planned to have mirrors but the scenery might make that a non starter.... can I use coloured lit push buttons or what other options do I have to monitor the staging ?

I'm still unsure about the mill run around track; can someone explain why it's a huge benefit it this form ?

I will aslo want to build a turn out into the main line; right infront of the water heater for a future engine facility that will be a stand alone in the space between the water heater and the heating system, which is on the northeast corner ( the house is a side split so the right hand wall "isn't"... it's where the 4 ft crawl space begins, the furnace is right there.................)

Should I consider a passing siding on the upper main that goes through the tunnel....? from just after the portal to just before the left hand switch ?

The staging yard TOs are simply sets of three #7s, all rights on the left end, all lefts on the right end. As for monitoring them, mini security cameras are very affordable now.

The runaround for the mill serves a couple of purposes. It was more useful before when you had a siding that was facing opposite from the rest: you need a runaround in order to work sidings facing both directions. Now it's not as critical, but it still serves as a way for trains on the main to get through while you may be switching the mill or the siding down to the barge.

Here's one with the engine facility TO by the water heater. Is this correct?

I also added another passing siding on the rear main where it connects to the staging yard.

Left turnout#5, 5.98".   7
Right turnout#5, 5.98".   7
Left turnout#7, 5.98".   9
Right turnout#7, 5.98".   9
Right curved turnout 22.5º   3
Left curved turnout 22.5º   3

QED?  ;D

All right, funny guy.  ;)  In my defense, I intentionally put that apostrophe in there, because the word "asshats" is possessive, as in "asshats' grammar."  I just chose to drop the redundant word "grammar."  Am I wrong?   :)

Dropping the redundant grammar, the better form would be,
