Actually, in my mind, you would never really view this scene from this angle.

So, that suggests a shallow relief version of the building might work. Otherwise, Ed's right--way too crammed, and not plausible.

Any chance you could snap a picture from across the layout to give us an idea of whatchu talkin' bout, Willis?  Oh, and in your last pic, your hoppers are fouling the main.  :P

While it looks a little cramped, as I recall, it's a door layout, no?  Show me a door layout that isn't cramped.  I'm going to let Tom tease out the scenery a bit before I start critiquing.  It reminds me a little of Gregg's dearly departed 2x4...  I'm sure it looked silly up close and personal, but it had some really good photo angles.

It sounds like he's using this as a photo bed, not necessarily as a museum quality display layout...  Personally, I'd get rid of all that wood holding it up.  Existential benchwork doesn't require anything but the idea of structure...

4 X 8, IIRC. Sort of equivalent to a door in N scale, I suppose.

Yep - 4x8 based on Dave Frary's Cactus Valley.  Definitely a train-set'y style, but it did have good angles.  Back in the day I was imagining having the Walthers pellet transfer station there:




Tall and narrow, but it takes a different type of hopper.... 

I'm amazed the grain elevator fits there at all!

A door layout in N is a ~5 x 12 in HO.  This layout is cramped.

But seriously, folks...  Yeah, Ed, you can take a nice photo on your layout from the right angle, but at the end of the day, it's a 5' loop and the trains look silly with more than 12 cars.  That's cramped.

Which reinforces my point... Tom's doing a photo stage, so the vignettes in and of themselves will be nice, but the overview of the layout will be just as crowded as the fabled kidney.

The big cramped industry with no access for employees won't be the only non-realistic aspect of the Hinshaw Valley!  Remember, in 32sq ft, there are 3 bridges and 3 tunnels.  I don't even know how that is possible! 

However, whatever is added to that location, I still need a paved area.  The industry could be interchangeable.
