So if the MAP price is 270. for the passenger set alone what would be a good guess on the LHS price ?

Well I am in for the passenger cars for 202.50 .

Say what you will about UP's protection of their corporate identity, but it was mostly the railroad's extremely poor tactics that got the dander raised of all those who had a free ride for years selling product of all sorts without the railroad's approval. The strategy of legally protecting one's corporate images and marks is very sound.

If you want to see "heavy handed' enforcement, just try selling some knock-off Disney products or using the "Coke" logo. You'll learn soon enough.

Almost every major company finds out that if it doesn't enforce proper use of trade-marks they lose the right to keep other people from using them also. Kleenex and Scotch tape come to mind.

With the current UP CEO, Jim Young, the approach to the hobby manufacturers changed almost overnight from one of "making a profit from the hobbyist" to cooperation and control over product quality, as it should have been in the first place. This is an old tired knock on a railroad that still maintains a steam program when all other class I railroads dumped theirs and which took great pains to mark the antecedent roads with its Heritage Fleet, Boy Scout locomotive, and now a locomotive honoring the fight against breast cancer. Give it a rest.

Actually his post is fairly factual. If you want to start another thread to discuss it, I'd be happy to participate.

no I am not going to start such a thread.
while you feel his post is ... pretty factual...
it is incomplete and when facts are left out one can and will create a lot of mis-leading ideas.

Not sure how it's mis-leading.  It pretty much summarizes the events with UP and licensing.

I don't think anyone here needs a term paper on the events just to make sure all sides are properly argued for.

Yes, I think we all know the history with the UP.  Now let's get back to the COLA !itself and your likes and dislikes before this thread gets locked for stupid reasons?

Can I say that I hate the UP beause their yellow is damn near impossible to get correct with my painting skills....?  ;D

I'm still singularily unimpressed with this offering; mainly due to the power - We've been "E'd" to death and they are not even E7's (which would be kinda neat, E5's which would be neat or E2's which would qualify for some superlative....................)

New power is the new bar - Thanks Fox Valley.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I jar of Floquil Refer Yellow and add 2 to 3 drops of Floquil Caboose Red is how I do it . In your case it requires an international move as well .

That will get you close to the Kato UP yellow? Have you used Pollyscale with similar results?

Thanks for the starter. I've got a few E units that I'm detailing up like the current Heritage units sitting on my desk.

I haven't bothered to try to match or even compare to manufacturers colors . 'sides there are a bazillion tones of UP egg yolk in real life . I have been using this home brew formula for decades , and it satisfies me . For UP gray I use almost a full jar of Floquil Refer Gray and to that I add 70 drops of Floquil Refer Yellow . Haven't tried water paint as I haven't had any good results with water paint , squirting or brushing .

Here is a resin Erie shell by Trungle on a LL chassis I painted years ago .

The color changes once the gloss and dullcoats are finally added , it gets deeper and darker . The reason I brew my own is I like the colors better , and I wanted to always be able to find the ingredients easily .

If you look at Union Pacific Armor Yellow in real life also Harbormist Gray they do tend to weather some, although todays paints are less prone to this. The passenger cars use to faid to a lighter more canary yellow and the gray roofs often weathered to an almost silver color. I saw this quite a bit on cars that were in long term storage in the late 1970's early 1980's. Both Con Cor and Atlas Rivarossi for years used a yellow color that was a bit too orange, but I found it easy to match,Testors yellow with a little red added. Shortly after Con Cor started manufacturing the passenger cars themselves, not Japan, and they added the diner and sleeper to the smoothside cars, they wet to a very inscorrect pale (canary) yellow color. A couple of years later they announced that Floquil UP Yellow was the only correct shade and they switched to that paint. Floquil has always looked correct to myself who got to see many UP passenger trains in their prime, both as a rider and as a  trackside viewer. Kato's yellow comes close. Life Like originally used a yelow that was a bit dark and gray that was almost black. They finally corrected this and got it dead on visually to me on their last run of the E-8/9 diesel in UP and Milwaukee (UP) colors. Now if they had only colored the side grills dull silver like they did on their first runs. Both Rapido and Walthers seem to me to also have the colors down pretty well. Nate Goodman (Nato).

Don't forget Kato changed their UP yellow - around the time the first run of AC4400's came out, they moved to a slightly darker, orangish color, which I believe is more accurate.

Since then they have been extremely consistent from product to product...

Greetings from the Cinque Terre.

Sometimes I forget how east cost centric this group is.  For me, this is a cool release.  It builds on previous releases, is prototypical, and is another name train set.

Back in the early 90's Kato released their first passenger sets.  These smoothside sets were UP prototypes, but didn't create a specific train. With a little mix matching, a few backdated Overland brass domes, a ConCor 10-6, one could create a decent City of Los Angeles. (Check out NSR article about that somtime in 2004) But now the Kato's will be even better.  Hopefully they read up on tinting dome windows in the same issue.

These sets will be awesome for someone like me who likes modeling Chicago traffic, as it fills in a bunch of gaps for all Cities trains.  Rock on.
