I was too tired to fix those brush strokes above the 'o', plus I remembered that Coxy wanted to see examples of fixing mistakes.

I started with the end of the car, but forgot to take a photo of one of the steps so I just started over on the middle panels.  I usually do the whole side of the roof at the same time.

The bleaching effect that you see is a chemical effect of the alcohol on the fade coat.  It would be even more obvious if the car was dullcoted.  If you work a little quicker, you can drop the alcohol and just use plain water.

Yes, you really can use Vodka.  This is Ed's invention; I'm not sure how he discovered it.   ;)

Oh I'll tell you how I discovered it!

I was working on a project back in college, and being that we were in a college apartment, didn't have any rubbing alcohol (why would we?), but we did have plenty of drinking alcohol. Vodka was clear, so I tried it. Lo and behold, it worked!

Because of the remaining sugar in it, it's a bit more viscose than rubbing alcohol, which makes it a little different to work with, but I've been happy with the results.

Except that rubbing alcohol is like $1.59 a bottle...and a gallon of WW fluid is like $3.00.

It'll make a very interesting chapter in Tom's book, that for sure.

Depends where you are in the world, back in the UK a litre of Vodka is <$15 but rubbing alcohol is $30+ for 2 litres. ;)

This from the man who creates steam and diesel motive power practically from scratch.  8)

Tucks, couplers, and wheel faces?    Were you thinking of doing the underside?

(I guess this model has friction-bearing trucks?)

Thanks,
Ed

Chris is overly kind :)

Yes, this model has friction bearing trucks, so we'll use the techniques in the Weathering book.

LOL.  I finished up the trucks last night.  A coat of roof brown for the trucks, and then add a little engine black to the roof brown for the wheels.  Use some Ivory black brush painted over the journal boxes to represent oil.  Follow up with a dusting of dirt.

I'll have photos eventually.
