Substitute for the late lamented Walmart Red Oxide spray bombs

Some of you have mentioned that you wish you could still buy the "Oxide Red" primer that Walmart used to carry (made by Krylon actually ..... so said their rep one day in my local Walmart...).

While digging around the paint section of my local Ace Hardware I came across "ACE PREMIUM PRIMER" in the red oxide color. It's a close match to the old Walmart Colorplace stuff.

The UPC is 0 82901 03529 9

And the Ace Part number is 1037605 / I1037605A

I've been using another brand...  I think it might be Krylon... can't remember.  But yeah, what a tragic loss that Walmart stuff was!

Lee, what you had mentioned was Krylon "Ruddy Brown", but I found it to be a poor substitute for the real thing - that 89 cent primer.

Yea.. the Ruddy Brown just doesn't have that "rust' feel to it....  ;D.   Way too "brown" IMHO.

As another potential alternative, look for "Brite Touch" Red Oxide General Purpose Primer. It's an el-cheapo paint found at automotive centers such as R&S Strauss. UPC 7 24504 08051 0

Only if you want to I guess.... I suppose it's one of those things some folks deem neccessary and some folks don't.

But IMHO Lee's WM hoppers (as seen in previous posts) do look cool running empty when he paints the interiors.

I was just curious as none of the hoppers in the link I posted have yellow innards. Maybe there was a specific class that does or maybe it just plumb wore away quickly in service.

I did note that the Blufords are gonna have old yeller in 'em so I'm sure they have paint diagrams or something.

Perhaps Lee can elaborate on this.

The red interiors were applied to the grey stone hoppers.  I can't remember where I read this, probably in the BMX or something.  But it looks hot in N scale....

I'd pick up every red-primer I could find (from different companies of course).

It seems the shades vary just enough to tell the difference from one to another.

Yes, yellow.  When the WM first started ordering cars with roller bearing trucks from the factory (late 1950's...one of the pioneering roads with this technology) they had cars so equipped marked with a yellow end, yellow sill, and a yellow ball with an R in it on the side.  Made for some right snappy looking cars!

Athearn's 50' boxes are so marked...
