Bryan,

That 7825 is HOT!!!  I wish I'd have done it that way.  I was at that stage where I had it weathered up but still in PC, but a little voice said "you have a proto photo of 7797; you can't just ignore it."  I could have.

The engine doesn't look as light in person; it's still pretty black.  It looks fine to me, but I wonder if I squandered the chance for a higher level of hotness.  Let me run her for a while and see; it's nothing to strip and re-decal her back to PC.

Dave,

I vote for hotness.  Way to make that GP38 all your own.  I have to admit that I cringe every now and then when I see the exact same locomotive or caboose that I own posted online by others.  I just, however, do not have the ability or the tools to do what you all do.  But I sure can appreciate it.

That said, if you decide to strip #7797, why don't you try to remove the new paint only, e.g., Q-Tips and your favorite paint stripper.  It would seem to me that you might be able to get your paint and weathering off without significantly damaging the factory paint.  It may be worth a try anyway, since you were possibly thinking about a completely stripping the locomotive anyway, and, if it comes off as easy as I think that it may, you'll save yourself a ton of work, even if you plan to renumber the unit.

Dave, I had always intended to create an ex-PC unit from the start.  But after I painted and decorated the unit in full PC garb (prior to weathering and re-decorating as CR), it looked really good!  (No quality PC-decorated geeps back in the 1980s.)  So when it came time to finish the job, I couldn't totally obscure the fallen-flag markings and went for the dirty faded look instead.  It's not an exact representation of the real 7825 but it's a fair representation of how some ex-PC geeps were restenciled.  The GP38 is paired normally as the lead unit with the ex-RDG GP35 below that is based on an HO model that Jim Six did.

I've since picked up a current Atlas GP38 in PC, as well as upgraded the mechanism under the ex-Reading GP35.  But with the new TCS decoders I can more-easily convert 7825, which will keep it active for a while.

Did PC really put the ACI labels on the side of the hood?

Apparently:

If N&W had taken that route, it'd make things a bit easier!

Yes, they were standard on nearly every PC hood unit I've seen pics of...  Most survived in some weathered form to the CR paint-out era.

As much as I love PC..in early CR, the RDG and LV paint-outs are much more appealing to the eye/interesting than PC paint-outs.

Dave you just missed out, MBK had the Atlas Master GP38 LV units on closeout $49...10 bucks less than undec.

I tucked one away for when I pick a LV paint out to do.

I don't know, paint outs weren't always filthy like you'd think.

Dave, did you see my comment on Atlas wrt this?

It's not as clean as it appears in the photo, but it isn't fully covered in road grime either.

That's what I did with a LV U23B as well as a CNJ SD35, an EL SD45 and a pair of L&HR C420s.  I'll get to them someday.

I'm thinking about an Atlas GP7 and leaving it PC for these reasons (the two Atlas road numbers):

I much prefer long hood forward (that's what she said?).  Tell me a PC GP7 isn't hot...  It might be plausible to be straight PC in 1980 (although not likely) in that the high-hoods seemed to be at the back of the repaint line.

No, I agree...not everything was covered in grime. The model could use some grime in the intakes etc. IMHO

However, one can always search until they find the correct photo. :)

You could represent PC on your layout as well? I cannot see why not.

My (In research/time constraint phase) modular layout is an industrial line in Detroit that will span/cover; very late PC, very early CR and primarily Shared A$$hats.

Detroit has basically looked that same since the 70's, and while I will favor the Shared A$$hat era I can run PC (my childhood fave) and some early CR (love the confusion and paint-outs) when I 'feel' like it.

Nothing says poverty like a PC GP-7.  That's bare knuckles railroadin' for ya.  I've been told that it was a handful of GP-9's and RS-11 that held down the traffic here on the Shore toward the bitter end.

But there were plenty of those HH's that did get the blues...  Witness Lewistown, 1986 or so...

ACI labels were standard in the era... that's not what I was remarking... I was noting that they slapped it on the side of the hood itself, not on a bracket on the side of the sill like I've been used to.  That's one of those neat details that stand out to me, nice job!
