Cat-Model Railroad Problems Solved...

I'm not talking about nerve gas, land mines or hand grenades here...

I also don't have a cat-railroad problem, but a cat-kitchen counter problem.  But the solution will work anywhere.

Check out SSSCAT - it's a small, motion activated device that blasts a spray of distilled water at kittie when he/she gets within 2-3 feet.  So far, it is devastatingly effective and comments from other say it has a "training effect".

When our cats trigger the device they leave the kitchen counters like their furry bodies were shot out of a cannon.

Cost was about $20 at Walmart - I bought three of them and so far very pleased - plus it's a blast to watch!

On counters, tables, and other low surfaces:
I use mouse and rat traps, with the triggers tied together by clear mono-filament.
Not only does the cat get the S#*@ scared out of it, but they often tangle their paws in the line - dragging it for an additional 10-15 feet.  They get so amazingly frightened of the area...  It's good for months of abatement.

On cupboards, fridges, shelves, and other higher surfaces (assuming they avoided the tape):
I use 3M (Scotch) clear packing tape (other brands just don't have the proper adhesive qualities).

I run the longest possible strip, for the counter space required, and invert it - sticky side up.
On each end, is a mouse trap with mono-filament from the trigger to a hard mount (tape, screw, thumb tack, or nail in/on the cupboard or wall).  I don't use long runs of mono-filament here, because I don't want to come home to a dead cat swinging from its accidental gallows.

Cats hate sticky stuff.  When they touch the tape (placed conveniently right where they land, when jumping up), they jump to get off the sticky surface.  Traps trigger.  Cats fly.  Everyone is happy....

Except that one time....  Our long haired cat got tangled in the tape on our highest kitchen cupboard, rolled onto the fridge - picking up more tape, hit a rat trap on the cupboard, fell to the floor, and sat there... for an unknown amount of time.  I had to nearly choke her to death, to get the rat trap off her tail (just hair); and she spent the next 6 months with a few bald spots.
---She hasn't been on anything but a bed or couch since.  ;D

I may have to get a cat just to watch that thing work.

On second thought, never mind.

We tried most of the known cat chasing techniques - but so far this is the only one that works...

The cats have simply stopped going up on the counters....  We have several kitties (my wife is a feral kitten rescuer/foster cat parent) and when the SSSCAT goes off it triggers a "cat stampede" out of the kitchen.

BlenderDefender might be the funniest thing I've seen in, well, ever.  ;D

What I did was use wide aluminum foil laid out on the perimeter of whatever I didn't want them on.  Stuff might as well be hot lava as far as the cat is concerned.   Exit.....stage right and stuff.

I just give Pickles a martini and a couple of hundred bucks to blow on ebay.  Keeps him out of the train room.

Nice shot there, but I prefer to ship a cat or two out of town to strangers whenever the wife is on a business trip:
