You should take a look at 'Mid Sized Trackplans for Realistic Layouts' from Kalmbachhttp://www.kalmbachstore.com/12424.htmlThere is a chapter on the Erie/LTV mining railroad which is very similar. N scale and HO plans are provided.
Everything blends. Just a general rule of model railroading...
..and when your looking at ore operations, don't forget some of the lesser known ore movers*. Here's a list from one of Dorin's books.DM&IR (DM&N, D&IR), GN, NP (BN), SOO, DSS&A, MILW, C&NW, LS&I, WC, Algoma Central, CN, DW&P, Erie Mining (LTV), ReserveMining, and B&LE.
I received my latest issue of Classic Trains magazine the other day and their was a nice article about railfanning the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range in the waning days of steam. This sparked an interest in the DM&IR. While traffic was pretty homogeneous, the operations seemed pretty interesting with trains transporting several different grades of ore, taconite, mining, steaming operations, Great Lakes ship loading, etc. Does anyone know of anyone modeling one of the big ore railroads? Any websites you know of about ore operations?I like this photo, and PBL has made an N scale 2-8-8-4 . . .http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/dmir/dmir-s226an.jpgThis would make a pretty spectacular N scale model:http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/dmir/dmir-dock-ags.jpgErik
There was a nice N Scale ore hauler in GMR about 15 years ago. IIRC the owner's name was Cermak or something similar. N Scale Magazine also featured his layout. I googled his name and found this page http://myrrlayout.com/R/aspfiles/DetailPage.asp?Xfer_Code=10001780 It's a pretty good summary of his layout. I forgot that he used NTRAK modules in the design.
