So this thread pops up, and I start wondering if these are still in service . . . an one rolls by my office buildin gon a CSX through freight!

We still see them all over down here. As of last summer there was a string stored in Commerce by the Toyota distribution center.
SCL also had a bunch very, very similar to Southerns. You could get at least 6 schemes off of Southern/NS and SCL/CSX by themselves.

I'd be willing to bet the HO'ers are gonna be paying a pretty penny for these.

Depends on the person. Some people will shell out huge sums of money on one freight car (weathered brass autoracks come to mind) others won't spend much more than 10 bucks on one car.

I probably wouldn't since Walthers and MDC did kit versions that in the 80s or 90s and can still be found. If they actually produce this model those older kits may be looking for new homes. IIRC, MDC also made a waffle-side box in N-scale. However, I don't know if the MDC or Walther's prototype is the same as the exactrail one.

Didn't SP have a waffle box too?
Vincent

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

Going into my Southern Color Guide, these cars were all PS and not ACF.

How funny is it that we'd get that weirdo 40' gon, but not these?

Geesh, we finally get a badly needed prototype and it's instantly called weird and made fun of. I've waited for someone to do ATSF for a long time and pick some up today. (the even made a conrail one). Id rather have these than another variation of a box car that looks too much like several other variations 8) :o

I spoke to a couple of reps at Springfield and told them we need these in N scale too. They were very receptive to the suggestion.

Everyone who wants these should shoot them an email and do the same.

(the even made a conrail one).

And it is completely, utterly wrong for anything ever owned by Conrail, thus making it not the least bit exact.

As long as they can keep the price in the mid-30's we can sell a container full in both scales down here in Georgia. I have no doubt these will be nice models. I wasn;t too impressed with the CVerti-pacs but the PS4000's are very nice cars.

I have overall been highly unimpressed with Exactrail, but the 4000's are INCREDIBLE cars.  I know everyone has dogged them here because of their inferiority to a car that doesn't exist yet, but they're nice in my book.  I wanted one of the SP PCF cars but no luck, and I'd yet to see any of the other boxcars or 5161's in person until an ops session this evening.  The 5161's are Trainman quality, but the boxcars were pretty nice and I'll probably eventually get one or two even though I've said I'm not buying any more boxcars, especially expensive ones.

Basically, if you're not peddlling modern tank cars, gons, or spine cars, I'm out.  Better be a freaking awesome car for me to consider it otherwise.

A more proper wording would be a car that isn't available to buy yet... as the cars most certainly exist.

Yet even more proper wording would be that one car existed and was available to buy!

Regarding the EXR PD-4000s, I think the Athearn covered hoppers that have been released over the past year or so (especially the ACF 2970 center flow) are more impressive.  The PC&F Southern Pacific boxcar looks good, and the BN Gunderson car is not bad.  The SP corrugated gondola is their best car to date - it sits at the correct height and is not compromised on the ends even though the couplers are truck-mounted.  But based on the sample I saw (and picked up and inspected) in Springfield, the upcoming 1970s Thrall gondola decorated for CP Rail will be their finest N scale model up to this point.
