Ore Dock screw up

Hi guys

I have made what one would call a fundamental screw up on the ore dock which means throwing what I've done so far away

This is heading for the rubbish bin


Now the reason for this is I made bins the wrong size. I did everything on 24 ft centers (ore cars 24 ft) All the bents are at 6 ft centers

With the purchase of some ore cars we did a little checking and nothing lined up ore car would only line up every 8th or 9th bin instead of every second one





It works out I'm 18" out Bins should be 13 1/2 ft not 12 ft

I did a quick test of the correct size bin



Here's the difference over 4 bins



Now all lower bents are at incorrect centers so I have to start again

You've also been working on that for, what, three years?  I don't think I could stand turning it into kindling. (I couldn't do it with yours, and I didn't even build the thing.)

So the bins are too short for the cars, right? Maybe you could sell it to someone who uses shorter *cough*older*cough* ore cars.

I wouldn't sweat it too much.  The impression that the structure gives the viewer far surpasses the accuracy of the spacing.

Keep in mind the Atlas cars are NOT accurate for Minnesota style ore cars. They are based on a Bessemer and Lake Erie prototype which were longer then those used by GN...

The 24' spacing on your ore dock are accurate...

Once again all ore cars used by GN, NP, DMIR, Soo, & CN were 24' long...

Hey Warren,
Don't scrap it, if you are really going to redo it put that one on TradeMe and help recoup some of your funds and put it on at a decent price as it is Custom built.

Ouch, I feel responsible for this!!! Those were my Ore cars in the photo's.

Warren, I'm with Alister on this one there mate. Don't just scrap but sell your
great workmanship. It's really not wrong it just doesn't fit the Atlas hoppers.

As I see it, you have the choice of rebuilding a currently correct ore dock to match incorrect cars, or keeping the ore dock and living with the discrepancy. If it were me, I'd stick with the model as it is now; I believe only the sharpest eye will notice the mismatch between cars and bins, if at all. FWIW, I can't see wasting years of work building something that's right, only to invest more years building something that's wrong.

Sleep on it for a few days (or weeks) and see if it still bugs you.  That's way too much nice work to dismiss so quickly.

You know, I can get wrapped up about stuff like this from time to time...  But this would be one of those things I'd let be.

You have done a lot of very excellent work here that really ought not to end up in the trash.  I agree with the consensus...  Sleep on it for a while.

Ouch.  If it makes you feel better, I built three sections, two that were 48 inch long,  of lattice truss before deciding on the final dimensions for my O Scale bridge.



I did give the reject truss sections to a professor to use in an class on history of technology. So they went to some use.

Scrapping it was a knee jerk reaction it kinda tick me off that I could make that bigger screw up 

Thanks to Ryan I did some checking in a book I have "Great lakes Ore Docks and Ore Cars" by Patrick C. Dorin. Which has now got me angry and puzzle with Atlas

B & LE had less than 2000 of these but there was 20,000 plus of the other style made why choose the obscure ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Also I found the 70 ton are a little to modern for me but I can live with that for now (pre 1940)

It has also given some more weight to the idea of design and build my own cars from etched brass

Think I'll sleep on it a while

I could never sell it way to much of me in it and funds wise materials less than 50 bucks invested 98% of it is time

Atlas chose that prototype because of the extra length... It was easier to hide truck mounted couplers underneath it....

I would definitely be interested in a proper Lake Superior ore car... Yummy...
