They have a CB&Q car in the eastern set, and it has graffiti? wow. CB&Q was midwest, graffiting was VERY rare back then, and likely would have been painted for BN by the 80s.

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

According to BLW's website, they were oversold before it even was shipped, something worked out well for them.

Maybe the people just wanted the other cars? who knows. It is a good job, but graffiti on a CB&Q car doesn't seem right to me. I'm not saying it never happened.

That's what kept me from picking up an Eastern pack.

CBQ car scheme screams late 60's, in anticipation of approval of the Northern Lines merger. I doubt I'm bringing a revelation to the group with that statement, though.

As for being in an eastern set, think of it being in assigned sevice to an eastern shipper for loading to a specific CBQ consignee. Happened a lot in those days. Car interiors would be customized for that particular lane in terms of load restraints, blocking and bracing.

In those days, RR's were gung ho for earning per diem by having cars off line, especially the shortlines. The firm I worked for had RI and RSP box cars assigned to the plant in WV served by Chessie (former B&O) as an example.

Actually those "Everywhere West" cars could be seen "Everywhere East"..I don't recall ever seeing a PRR,NYC,B&O or C&O freight that didn't have 2 or 3 of these CB&Q cars in the train's consist.

True the cars could be see in the east, it's not an eastern-based road. Maybe that one is a moot point, but that's not what really pets me.

The part the I don't really get is the graffiti. I doubt it was like that in the 60s.

Yes, it's a major stretch of reality. Urban-style gang tagging emerged in the '70s, although the venue initially was Hispanic neighborhoods in NYC, and their primary RR graf target were subway cars to assert their territory claims on the other gangs. That puts it technically within the lifespan of a boxcar with BN green lettered for CB&Q. The "Oh, come on!!!" stretch is the highly graphic over-paint style, which came about in the '80s, and also that the gangs weren't generally tagging freight cars until after 1990 or so. You'd see a spray-paint tag occasionally in the '70s, but it was always just a simple squiggle of some sort, and on a car in apparent NYC-area traffic.

Maybe not in your view since you think Baton Rouge, but they did go to Beaumont and Dallas in their previous configuration. As far as the RR's were concerned, any railroad west of the Miss. and south of St Louis was in the SWFB for purposes of rate publication. So, pre mergers, MP, MKT, SSW, and SLSW were southwest lines.
