Planning a new N&W layout

Hi guys,

It's time I started planning my next (shelf) layout, and want to include two things I've never done before.

1) Norfolk and Western RR around late 70's into 80's
2) Urban switching with street running.

I'm in need of help on a couple of points. Firstly, who makes hi-short hood conversions etc? I'm looking at SD40-2s and GP35s.

Secondly, to try and cut down the 100,000 results I'm going to get on my first google search, can anyone suggest specific locations on the N&W RR that might fit the bill for inspiration?

Cheers,

Kev

Atlas makes a stock SD35 High Hood which has been available in N&W in a couple of schemes.

You could use the short hood from this shell to bash your GP and SD, but be advised that the SD-35 hood is closer to scale width than the Kato-made GP35 and SD40-2, which are both considerably wider...

These hi-nose cabs were designed for Kato EMDs, and since the Atlas GP35 was also tooled by Kato for Atlas this should work for the GP35 too (that's what I'm doing):

N&W rostered 11 high nose SD40-2s, these were the last hi-nose units ordered by N&W (1625-1635)

Hmm, N&W and big city always seem very anti-thetical to me.

But I'm guessing it did happen. I'm curious to see where though.

by the late 70's the N&W empire included many urban areas including Buffalo, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago.

Actually by October 1964.

Although I don't know much about street ops in these towns N&W also ran through Norfolk (duh?), Petersburg, and Roanoke in Virginia.

the OP is looking to model the late 70's - i'm sure they trimmed a bit of the redundant Wabash, WLE, and Nickel Plate trackage

What does that have to do with "Buffalo, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago."? All of this was N&W starting in 64 (or before!) and (it goes without saying) none of these cities were abandoned  ;D by the late 1970s. ;)

so why did you bother to make a comment about 1964 knowing the OP was interested in the late 70's?  big deal, you know when all the mergers took place, how is that helping answer the OP's query?  i'm sure some customers were lost in the abandonments since the mergers... and possibly some urban switching, like in Cleveland.

Simple - because your post implied that N&W achieved this "by the late 1970s"

as for the street running, check out Mehring Way in Cincinnati.

If you were to do Norfolk, VA in the early 70's, it would mean you could run NS equipment.   8)

This line was taken up in 2001 or so, but surely this ex-NKP line in Erie was in use in the late 70s:
