Downtown Deco - Blue Comet Mfg.

Since just about everywhere is currently back ordered on C55 flex its time to start working on some buildings to kill the down time. One thing this layout is going to have are massive structures, so for one area I decided that a very simply kitbashed Downtown Deco Blue Comet Mfg would fit perfectly. I decided to move the Shaws warehouse that I had at this location before feeling that this building fit the area better. Shes 8"W x 35"L so far.

This is my first Hydrocal kit.

Walls have been sanded and glued, and the building is test fit for the location.

Nice Ian.  Gives that big industry feel, but without being overly huge.  What sort of industry is it, anyway?

Good point.  Maybe stiffen it with aluminum 'L' pieces?

Oh she's braced up like all hell. Because I don't have the radiators installed yet in the layout room I have to do my modeling on the kitchen table upstairs and models have to survive the trip!

I was thinking of having this be a GE turbine plant like the one in Somersworth and Hooksett NH or a large storage warehouse that I found in a mill building in Somerville, MA

That's one big a@@ model.... I really like the idea of a GE plant - the one we have in Peterborough, Ontario looks somewhat like that (Traction motors and nuclear products). The switching potential for such a factory is great too. How do you intend on painting and weathering such a beastie ?
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Only GE would build those two things in the same facility. ::)

Why does this building remind me of the "old" Montgomery Ward building in downtown Baltimore?

IIRC it was very important to spray primer on the plaster or it'll suck up paint faster than Chulvis with a pitcher of Margaritas.
Best regards,

Roger

Yeah the painting tips with the kit said to prime with white or gray primer. I have however seen photos and threads of the Downtown Deco buildings being done with out being primed and using washes of Creamcoat paints. I like the non primed better. I do have.a left over wall to try out both methods.

The color is throwing you off, Brian.  The Monkey Wards building is more art-deco looking, with arched windows only on the top floor.  Monkey Wards is also poured reinforced concrete... not the stack o' bricks that Ian's doing.

It's a really cool building.  It's right by the B&O line that connects the old Mt. Clare line with the main, so I assume it had a rail siding at one point or another.

And definitely a project that shouldn't be attempted in anything larger than N scale... ;)

GE in Peterborough is still operating? Last time I was there, it looked like a ghost town... and dig the ancient four axle CP depressed center flat around back; wonder if CP will ever want it back?

Ian, I remember seeing shots of the earlier mock-up you had at that location and being impressed with the size of that building. When complete, that is going to be a real beauty... and it has such a perfect look to it. I'm envious of you guys with layouts, but I thinking my purchase of a basement with rudimentary living quarters above will happen in 2010... no more condo  :D

Thanks Mike. I'm am going for as many properly scaled buildings as I can. So far this is the 2nd largest building, replacing the what not looks tiny NuComp warehouse that was there. The Freudenberg NOK building is the largest so far at 9', located 15' to the "east" of this building.

Very nice.

Greatly appreciate the post since I'll be tackling some Downtown Deco buildings shortly.
