I was going to get one of the athearn CR cars until Bob mentioned his.

I still might, but I'm in a holding pattern now.

I just found something that I missed in the original inspection....

The Athearn car has photo etched window screens hidden in the packaging. Totally missed it. They are there if you want to install them. I'm surpised nobody caught this yet.

Either one has possiblities of "slight modifications" into a "stand-in" KCS stainless caboose. Roof change will be the biggest challenge. MT is offering "undecs" which could rapidly become Frisco Bay Window cabeese, if there's any left! ::)

The Undecs are going to be regular stocking items so you should be able to get what you want.  If your dealer says he can't get any, email me at MTL and I can check in the plant.  By the way, We were able to lower the Caboose .020" by modifying the the underframe and it sits much better.  These changes were on the second SP Caboose onward including the Undecs.

Someone check this more carefully, but by my rough calculation the MTL is about 10% higher from the floor to the roof than the Athearn car.

Although I have no real interest in this caboose, comparing the models to the prototype this looks to be a slam dunk for Athearn ...

(Glad to hear MT acknowledge the height issue and that steps were taken to improve it!)

I tried ordering 2 undec Microtrains cabooses from my local hobby store and were told that they are backordered.  Will they be in any time soon?

I figured they would.  I ordered the 2 MT undecs when they announced the undecs.  I figured they would come in with this months cars.  If they are not available for a while, I will just cancel and get a few Athearn undecs.
