 EMD DD40-B Unit Kitbash?

ok guys my spectrum dd40 had a nasty crack in the cab so now the cab is gone

and i want to make it into something like this...

anybody have a spare body or is there a flat back half if a train that would match the flat side of the dd40

If it is an older release you may be able to pick up the whole unit for a good price now that the new ones are out.  Will Bachmann sell you a cab as parts?

The proto pic is of course a DD35B, not a 40. I don't know if there were also prototype DD40Bs, but the fact that there were B unit versions of the DD35 sets a plausible precedent for a "what-if" version of a DD40B. Should be an interesting kitbash of a big locomotive.

I'd start by finding a spare shell and cutting the other end off and grafting it in place of the cab on your model.  Admittedly, I'm a non-expert who has not closely examined the prototype, but wouldn't the unit be roughly symmetrical end for end, less a few minor details like the brake wheel?  Could at least provide a start and you fix the details.

Hope this helps,

I think that's probably how I'd do it.

Did you see the great article on the DD35s in this month's Railfan & Railroad?

Are you going to address the fans and the radiator grilles to get the correct number and spacing?

I guess it's a little late now, but you do know where the DD40's cab came from, right? An F45/FP45. Either way, I think it's looks pretty good.

Had it been me, I'd have gone for the extreme; a DD45XB. Instead of having 2 16-cylinder 645E3As, it would have had 2 20-cylinder ones. Think 2 SD45Xs put together, 8,400 hp!!! :o
Vincent

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.
