I'm on the same page as you, Dave.  There's a small part of my layout that has been described as a "cassette," but it's permanently mounted, rendering it a mere 24" extension of a piece of track.  Like you, I was concerned with how to move a cassette and not derail or drop everything inside.  Ultimately, I may replace the "cassette" with a return loop for my Southern Ry. interchange.

I will admit that I like Chris333's fiddle yard, which is a great idea for hidden staging, as it saves the length of a yard ladder.  See Pages 12 and 13 of his Erie HCD thread in the Layout Engineering Forum.

Love the F7As with the antennas!  8), Also see you have some new Pennsy signals! Are those the Traincats?

I love the sound dubbing. What do you use as a source?

Magic.

Nah, I bought some train sounds off of iTunes and then snipped bits and pieces off of YouTube for the various other sounds I needed.  In most cases there are 3-4 sounds layered on.

I really do need more Unitrak.
Seeing that video made me want to get my old childhood dogbone loop up and running once more, except now maybe as a 4-track main.

Certainly a much needed pick-me-up.

Do it!  Sometimes there's no greater hobby joy then bending down to track level and squinting to imagine you're in N scale railfan and watching the endless parade of power rolling by on America's Broad Way of Commerce, the mighty Pennsylvania...the Standard Railroad of the World.

Of course, there's always Penn Central...
