Actually, what I have in mind would fit perfectly, but for that entry door opening into the room.  I may have to draw something up, if I'm not being clear.  Think about this (ignoring that door for now), turn the entire layout 180 degrees, so Lewistown is the first thing you see when you enter the room.  Center the original JD left to right, so that there is an aisle along the wall by the window and the opposite wall.  Enola's extension will now run into the long empty wall and a 12" HCD could be run down that wall (all the way to the corner, if you like).  The layout would be a lower-case "n" in the blueprint above with the left side of the layout against the wall.  You would have an aisle on the window wall, the wall with doors, and the wall at the bottom of the blueprint.  Any clearer?

By the way, if this could work, the plan could be designed so that that the 12" shelf could be removed without disturbing the mainline run, in case a future home won't fit this expanded layout.

You say 180 degrees...but it sounds like you're describing a 90 degree turn?   :?

If I'm following, here's what you have now:

Here's what DFF is proposing:

And here's what I'm proposing:

And yes, these are close to scale.

Before I attempt any trackwork, this:

If I understand the arrangement of the JD in the room now, turn it 180 degrees.  The wall with the window is at left and the wall with the two doors is at the top.  I figured on a room that is 9'9" x 16'6".  Unless I'm missing the dimensions of the room or the layout, or there's some other obstacle in the room I don't know about, this could work.

Note: This has the full Enola extension at the end of the original JD, so there is no cut HCD.  But, you could still notch it to perhaps make the transition near the stone arch bridge to the extension easier.

Either one of those methods looks like a good way to add some lengthy staging.

And then the Enola yard could simply be a small classification yard without have to serve as the main staging platform.

Geez, Dave, looking at it closer, you have tons of room!  You could even run another 12" shelf up the shorter end wall and gain a hell of a branch line.

Yes, but Jacob's 2.5' x 5' layout is along the window wall.  It can be moved if necessary.

I need to make some measurements, but today just went down the sh!tter because Ranger's having his weekly emergency.  This time he cut his paw pad down to the tendon so we're doing the emergency vet thing again.

Thank God for pet insurance.

Sorry to hear about Ranger.  Is he turning out to be accident-prone?  Hopefully, he'll get through this phase.  Bring on the cone!

Oh, that's what I was forgetting: Jacob's layout.  I figured that there had to be something that would make it more difficult than it seemed.  When things calm down out there and you can get some measurements, we'll be here.  Good luck with Danger, oops, I mean, Ranger.   ;)

Okay, I took measurements before relieving my wife at the vet.  I was wrong; the space is 10'6" by 14'8".

However, note that on my new pencil drawing, Enola is 7'8" long, not 6'8" long.  I was counting on using a portion of the "notch" to extend the door.  It looks as if you're scaling it as if it's just 6'8" long.

Now I'm sitting at the vet...staring down another deductible...sigh.  He's had more emergencies in two months than Howie did in his first 3 years.

I did go 6'8", because you could now take advantage of all that real estate along the wall on a shelf.  Besides, the extra 1' length of Enola would mean you couldn't get your entry door all of the way open.  But, I can go back to the plan with accurate dimensions now.  I'll be back.

Good luck with Ranger.  There goes the hobby budget.

Ok, it's making sense now.

If I were to butt the second door whole against the tunnel end of the JD I would need to do some creative things with the scenery and track.

However...  Notching it might preserve room for Jacob's layout.

Still not thrilled with stub-end staging but it does mean I have other options for the new 3' door.

Okay, this is on the room dimensions of 14'8" x 10'6".  With that little bit of room width added to the short side, I revised the footprint of the layout to the dimensions you provided earlier, i.e., the extension is 7'8" long with a 16" notch where it meets the original JD.  So, the long side of the original JD grows by 20" to 8'4".  Enola, as stated is 7'8" on the long side.

The aisles at left and top are about 36".  It might be a little tight between the 12" shelf and the end of the original JD at about 26", but if you don't go there, you'll have plenty of room.

Oh, and don't forget that we could squeeze a wye into the extension so that the stub-end yard could head in either direction.

Dave, I like it...  But I think I would ditch the shelf on the short wall.  I really don't see it adding much.  Eliminating it lets me move the JD back a bit to the right leaving Jacob's layout on the left.  Maybe.

The narrow L shaped staging yard you have there would require unacceptably tight curves for the long backup moves it would require.

I was also thinking about that same revision. It would give room to connect the stub ends and allow for runaround moves. Not as good as run-through, but better than long backing moves.
