When Dave does "the big one" I would like to see a dual era PRR/Conrail...complete with removable track 3 over the mountain.

He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

I'm surprised no one else took me to task on the line I put in about considering expanding using Unitrack except you!

As for the era thing, Ed has heard me say this...  It's never really been a PRR/Conrail layout.  It's a PRR layout on which I sometimes run Conrail.

Looks like you're modeling three eras now.  Time to update your signature: PRR in 1956, PC in 1968, and CR in 1980.  :D  I split the difference between 1956 and 1980 and hit the first year of PC's existence, but feel free to pick your own PC year.

So I'm still having issues with my brass on the Peco turnouts.  Yet my brass is happy as clam chowder on my son's Unitrack layout.

Hmm...

You know you can have all the track up and unitrack down in a day. Ballasting you can do as time permits  :D

This will probably be shocking to come out of my mouth, but, since Code 55 is still unavailable and since that new Unitrack looks just as good as the Code 80, I will agree that you should just consider replacing at least the mainlines with Unitrack.  Since you already have some Unitrack down in the tunnel (if I remember correctly), this is probably not as big a deal as it sounds.  Then you can replace the sidings with Code 55 later to distinguish the high iron from the lowly secondary track.

This picture shows me that it looks good and works. Why? When I see this picture it reminds me of the Boston and Albany line between Albany NY and Springfield Ma. To me the scenic elements take your eyes off the tracks. The roadbed, foliage, hills, the whole presentation looks good. Sounds odd I know but it does. Beside you I like DFF'd idea of the mains done over. That will let you run the mainline trains. You want a sign, there is a nice write up about using and making Unitrack look good in the SAME issue of N scale magazine as your layout  :)

Temptations!!!  Looking at options that ditch the stub-ended Enola but add another 36"-wide HCD.

Any such option must include some amount of staging.

David Popp's recent NSR article got my expansionist juices flowing!

The stub-endedness, however, negates however cool it may look.

Dave, You already have your staging yard in hand and it comes complete with a engine terminal. If you expand with one or more hollow core doors, keep Enola and use it for staging? Depending on how things fall after adding another door or two, you might have to remove the curve on the Enola module, but to my eye it looks like a pretty good staging yard to me.

Enola doesn't work well for anything beyond equipment storage and display.  I also don't have room for more than two doors.  So, if I change anything, the current incarnation of Enola must go.

Those insanely long backup moves to enter/leave Enola are neither prototypical nor particularly fun.

Just soak Enola in 91% Alcohol and reuse all the track and other assorted details.
