Here's a bit of 'case on point' of what you'll be dealing with.

From a mid-60's train list, I found that there were very steady movements of autoparts using C&O boxcars.  I was able to get the information I needed to create the decal.

Only to discover that there is no car that is close (don't use the drawing - it's the wrong car).  Not only that, but there aren't really that many options to kitbash from. And this is one of the cars you'll never see painted probably due to the C&O logo which is a bit unique ('for progress on one side' and Chesapeake &Ohio' on the other) and the color scheme which is different from other C&O cars (yellow on black)

But it stays on the list of needed cars while I work on what I can.

this is not my first layout, i'm well aware of what i'm doing.  i've been in the hobby for over 25 years.  i'm not looking for super detailed - i had a P:87 layout before (and really liked it).  i'm looking to run trains with rolling stock which are reasonably accurate.

I think that about says it all .. there is nothing more we can help you with.

an airbrush does not solve the problem of grossly inaccurate cars, mis-proportioned dimensions, or fantasy models.  how many Atlas 40' PS-1's with the wrong door need i stomach?

if i want to paint all my cars, fine, but show me a modicum of decals that i can use.  i'm looking for EL and LV decal sets for 2 bay covered hoppers - can't find them.  i don't have $1000.00 to drop on a decal maker, never mind i don't have the expertise to make them.  if only manufacturers stopped treating N scale like a toy.  sure, it's getting better, but what the hell is wrong with MTL - pizza cutters, really?  30+ years and counting.

Why aren't you using the MT PS-1 it's light years ahead of the Atlas car?
What MT Cars are you thinking about?

Thou art holy.  I confess that I have sinned against you in Atlas, MTL, and IMRC foobies, by what I have done and by what I have left undone.  Forgive the iniquity of my sin with which I have ever offended you and justly deserve your temporal and eternal damnation.

i have 1 MTL PS-1 and it looks grossly over-sized compared to the Atlas.  and that's what it comes down to - different manufacturers making compromises on the same car which result in horrible looking models when placed next to each other.

If it stresses you out so much, why not go back to RC cars?

i haven't done anything with R/C cars in 20 years.  my point is, that if i'm taking the time to create a reasonably accurate layout, why do i have to settle for really poor models.  i think the "car of the month' crap is hurting the scale.

Steve, you may not realize it but you're essentially denigrating the work of everyone else here in N scale by writing off N scale as toy crap.  I don't see Ed's, Lee's, or anyone else's work that way, and quite frankly, you haven't earned the creds to make that sort of sweeping generalization.  Now, you're obviously deep-sea fishing for attention with this whatever-it-is, but don't pull us all down to feel marginally better about yourself.

Jokes are jokes, but this is getting really lame.

Because that's what's available Steve.

You either make do with what's available and adapt it to suit your needs, or don't.

It's a narrow minded and immature view to get all pissed when the manufacturers aren't lining up to mortgage their businesses to make the cars that YOU want (right now).

Starting a thread complaining about why you can't model what you chose to model (well knowing the limitations) because the manufacturers didn't forsee your needs 20 years ago (when some of these cars were tooled) seems kinda pointless to me if you're not looking for actual solutions.
