So sad & sorry to hear this news. I can't add anything that hasn't been said above: a gentleman; like many here I enjoyed 3rdrail's stories & photos, and appreciated the time and patience that he put into this forum and into the hobby. He will be missed! RIP Gregg; my condolences to his family.

Gregg and I shared a love of billboard reefers.  In 2004, I made my first decals for two Pabst reefers and sent a set to Gregg, which he used on these models:





We also collaborated on the Blue Ribbon Malt set that Chris just posted.

I can't remember when Gregg became a moderator here, but it's been probably 3+ years.  John picked him because he was a decent guy who treated everyone fairly, knew a whole lot of railroad history, and was online a lot!

Hardly a thread went by without Gregg's input.  It was always fun to read about topics that Gregg had first hand experience and knowledge in.  He had an amazing memory.  I really don't think these train forums will be the same without him.

I certainly enjoyed all of his one-of-a-kind photos, of which he seemed to have an endless supply of!

Yes, Gregg will be missed.

Man, this is sad!  I met Gregg at the Wiregrass Train Show in Dothan several years ago.  He was very encouraging about my NTrak module and even posted pictures of it on his website.  He also piped up with encouragement when I posted pics here of my N scale Athearn wrecker which I had added cables to.

I have looked forward to seeing him and his little (2 X 3 foot, I think) portable layout at Dothan every year.

Does anyone on the forum have plans to adopt his little layout and take it to shows?  It would be nice if someone would do that and add a nice plaque to the front in his memory!  I'll volunteer, but I think if someone who knew him better than I wanted to do this, that should supersede my offer.  I'm sure he had many close friends who knew him from more than just one show a year like I did.  Even if he made me feel like an old friend.

Let's not let that little layout go to waste unless he had specific plans he wished to be for it.

My deepest condolences to Gregg's family for their--and our--loss. I didn't know him all that long, but we did some private messaging outside of the Railwire as we both shared an interest in period advertising, and we'd begun building quite a large collection. He was always a gentleman and a professional, and given his vast pool of railroading knowledge, which he freely shared, he will be sorely missed by much of the model railroading community.

I offer my condolences to Gregg's family for their loss.  I never knew Gregg, but read many of his posts it was clear he was asset to the members on this board.  My daughter and I will lift him and his family up in our thoughts tonight!

I hate saying goodbye. Although I didn't have any interaction with him that I can remember, I enojyed reading his perspective. Like others have mentioned, I had noticed that the Proto Photo threads seemed to be slowing down. I hope his family has all that they need and know that there are people all over this world missing him and his information right now. An invaluable source of railroad knowledge has been taken, not to mention a family man and a gentleman.

Rest in Peace Gregg, we will miss you.  :'(

I always enjoyed Gregg's photographs and sharing on this and other forums, both the prototype pictures, photos of his modeling, and his personal knowledge of railroad operations.  Though I didn't know him personally I certainly feel his loss and will keep his family in my thoughts.

Wow, that is bad news...Gregg was an important contributor here, with his knowledge of railroad operations, the PRR, the AN and his collection of photographs.  :'(

Like Chuck I got to meet him in Louisville in person; he specifically came over and introduced himself to me.  He obviously knew who I was, and the only way he could have known me was via the mug shots from Lee's operating sessions posted here on Railwire.  As fate would have it, I later wound up buying his Louisville banquet car when he advertised it for sale here on the forum.

He will be missed.

I'd also like to thank Chuck for watching over the flock here; his efforts go above and beyond the call of duty and I salute him.  That couldn't have been an easy conversation to have.  Thanks Chuck!

Wow... talk about a kick to the chest.

What sad news. I only knew Gregg through the forums, but what a knowledgeable modeler! The thing I always noticed about Gregg was that he actually BUILT things, and he MODELED. I also don't recall him ever demean anybody else's efforts. We've definitely lost one of the good guys.

My sincerest sympathy and prayers go out to his family. He will be greatly missed.

This is very sad news, my condolences to Greggs family. He was well respected and liked, very knowledgeable and a huge loss. He will be sorely missed not only by Pennsy modellers but others also due to his huge knowledge of railroading.
