Well, they sure look nice enough for me. I sure hope he matches his Armour Yellow to Kato or Atlas instead of being creative or leaving it to the 14 year old Chinese paint mixer.  And I sure hope those handrails are as sturdy as they look - I don't like the Intermountain "breakthrough" handrails.

But those grab irons - obviously these will be pre-installed at the factory.

As far as FVM vs. Kato - I think if you look over the 1000 or so comments I've left here and over 2500 at the Atlas forum over the years, I don't think I ever said Kato's models were superior to anyone. I think I said consistent. You can pre-order them with confidence. And by the way, Soo, et. al. I have been fiercely critical of Kato on many occasions as well, as if it really mattered what I thought about Kato (or what you think I think about Kato).

If Kato's not doing ES44AC's and it helps FVM to get preorders - I'd pre-order them.  I'm sure there will be delays and other issues though, but my attitude is "it is what it is"...

I guess we can all feel just a little bit of good ole' American Pride  as we pre-order a Chinese made model instead of a Japanese made one...   ;D

Personally
I would be hoping for an actual match to UP Armour Yellow that was applied to the real thing.

Adjustment by Floquil, Scalecoat, IM, Kato, Atlas along with countless others has given us some pleasing colours among others that made us question our eyesight.  A couple of shades can make a huge difference.  I will hope for slightly lighter to help with our dim layout rooms and to make weathering easier when faded paint is called for...

Matthew (FVM) way to go!!

Now, you know me and what my first question would be...

When will the parts (body shells) be available!!!! ;D

I have some B23-7s on the FCN that need an upgrade to ES23DCs!!!

Well Done Matt ;D

Skibbe, what what?

Tivo, why would you want that? You plan to run GEVOS and nothing else? The only thing that would make me NOT buy them is if they look totally out of place with other units.

Seldom
do I see proto locos exactly the same shade/tone.  Perhaps when delivered new they are, but I would proably be modeling 2years or more old with that new loco shine long gone.  This and other not yet made announcements continue to increasingly test my resolve to stick to 1984.  A 25 year fast forward may be in my not too distant future...

So, you're planning to set your railroad in the year 2035?   ;D

The GEVO's were delivered over the past 3-4 years, along with the SD70ACE's, so they should match.

I think manufacturers should really strive to keep the paint to close tolerances. The problem is the inconsistency is usually illogical both within a fleet and particularly with respect to any particular moment in time.  Prototype paint may change from time to time, but fading is consistent - older paint jobs are more faded.  Model paint variations are usually random - ie.  Atlas CR GP38-2's are really dark. But they were delivered before B40-8's which are lighter.  And within the CR GP38-2 fleet every unit is faded slightly differently, but more than a freshly painted unit.

Lou,

What I heard this morning was that if the end user (modeler) wants the grab irons on the model, he or she will need to drill out the dimples and install the furnished grab irons.

BLMA?
will they be pre-painted in the right colors... ?
... But those grab irons - obviously these will be pre-installed at the factory...
No they won't.  They will be included for those who wish to install free-standing grabs.  Where do you come up with this stuff?

I do not believe they will be painted to match the deco scheme, but that was not stated outright during the conversation.  I'm pretty sure I heard Matt say they would be BLMA grabs.

Maybe I missed it, but did they say if an undec would be available?

Paint color matching can be rather subjective, since indoor layout lighting can vary so much.

I'm so glad that someone else has put there foot on the throat of the GEVO series and also looking east of the Mississippi to start painting NS/CSX and other road names. Judging by the pictures which can't do this beautiful GEVO any justice I can't wait for this locomotive roll out. Great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Operating ditch lights?

on TB is a picture where you can see the model from the front and it looks exactly like a Kato AC4400, same ditch lights, same plow with molded on hoses...

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/968/Portland_N-scale_convention_004r.jpg

...(even the hoses on the back look like the ones from Kato) - so as this GEVO looks like an exact copy of the Kato model I would assume that the ditch lights will work as well...

You know, this myth about Kato only offering models in roads west of the Mississippi is getting ridiculous. It's fun to talk about, but it is not true. Not only do (did) BNSF, UP, SP, CB&Q and ATSF run east of the Mississippi, but Kato offers a fair selection of other east-of-the-Mississippi roads: CSX, NS, Conrail, CP. The marketing issue seems to be that the strictly "eastern" roads just don't sell as well. EL models hung around on dealer shelves for a long time, same with NYC and PRR. Kato still has D&H PA's in stock.

The GG1 didn't operate west of Harrisbugh PA, but that's about as far east as Kato wants to go.

What Kato doesn't seem to have as much interest in are roads that don't run into Chicago. They have done D&H, SR,  GN, but nothing much in New England roads or regionals. They seem focused for modern era models on the former Super Seven and successors.

If Kato offers the GEVO, I'm sure they will offer CSX and NS, if those roads roster them.

I know Kato has produced plenty of locomotives with CSX/NS road names, but both run in the same area that UP/BNSF flows. I will still buy my far share of BNSF/ UP locomotives. Railroads have just started run thru trains leaving their loco consist with it's trains.
