FYI:  The Walthers Gold Line HO cars all come with a sack of grabs that must be installed by the modeler.  A #80 drill bit is required to drill out the dimples.

HO Walthers passenger cars as well, along with decal roadnames.  I've seen a lot of them running around layouts at trainshows without either installed, and people still seem to be having fun with them.

Besides, the people who won't be installing the grab irons probably won't care that there arn't grabs to begin with.  And the modelers will enjoy the advancement.

That is exactly right. probably 75% of the people who buy these cars in our shop will tell you they won;t bother with either and that's HO. Many usually end up at least decaling them. Some add them later on either when they have time or don't get intimidated. For some members here to think that the model isn't good or worth the money unless they are installed would ahve a heart palpatation if they found out what the price would be with them factory installed and painted.

Granted Matt might be taking a calculated  risk, but I'll go out on the proverbial limb and say it won't have a negative impact on sales.

The first few runs of the Atlas SD60M did not have the grabs on top off the nose install so I dont see what is the big deal about FVM doing the same. I like doing stuff like that to a new engine.
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

That's what I've always thought.   I don't understand why anyone would miss cast-on grabs, esp. those whose primary interest is running & operations. But for those who prefer to add their own freestanding grabs, it helps a lot.

So to me it sounds like a win-win.  And kudos to mfrs who are not afraid to try new ideas.

But the real question is with that mech when are the -9 and AC44 comming out ?

Wow, I was kinda yawning this one into oblivion until I saw this post.  Interesting and potentially exciting thought.  A BNSF spec FVM Dash 9 with "roll your own" free-standing grabs?  SOLD!

Since I wasn't really paying attention before, will the FVM GEVO's have ditchlights?  (Nevermind, I'll check the specs myself...)

Dang.

I go away for a few days and this thread happens.  Talk about missing the fun.

A welcome development though...
