I can only hope that in 30 years we'll see shortlines painting GP38-5s with Can Openers.

Oh, man, is that sweet!

My wife commented yesterday she wished Norfolk Southern would do a PRR heritage unit (since last year we got to see 5 of the 6 UP heritage units at North Platte).  She likes the 5-stripe Lowey scheme (who doesn't?).

Not exactly what you have in mind but here are a couple of Escanaba and Lake Superior GP-38s (probably in Green Bay). Nice job on the Great Northern scheme...they hadn't gotten around to repainting the trailing unit. Could be a tribute in the making!

Best wishes, Dave

I really, really like this & hope more RRs choose to do at least one unit in a
heritage scheme of some sorts. The only Reading units I've ever seen in real
life were the ones patched for CR back in the late 70's.

I've chosen to do something similar for my future layout, based on my old fave
RR. (sorry Lee)

I was glad when Progressive rail adopted the old MNS scheme.  Black and pink and teal just wasn't doing it.

Ed, you've probably at least seen pics of this SW, and Lee's seen this one too, but I figured I'd share with the group:

MDDE #801 (Ex Conrail Express) working the Snow Hill line bringing an empty grainer back to Georgetown to the NS interchange. Picture taken by fellow MDDE co-worker Jason Yeatman. This locomotive will probably never get painted, not out of love for Conrail, just too darn expensive. It is normally stored anyway, but both CF7s are down with traction motor issues.

That poor CR Express unit... it got banged up right out of the shops before it ended up over in your guys hands.

BTW, given it's expected longevity, there's no real hurry, but I'd like to know who we would talk to about making sure it finds a good home if it were ever to suffer something catastrophic.

I was wondering that too...

Lee-HA! I never thought of that. (Hocking-hairballs)
But in all honesty & fairness, I was a B&O nut
when I got into trains in '78, & found out Chessie had taken over, so I got into
Chessie too, & also found out they took over the WM.
I -do- like the WM, mainly because my best buds growing up were from Garrett Co,
& their family was probably related to about everyone there. (they had the newspaper
from Oakland sent to them here in Ohio on a weekly basis)

I love the B&O, C&O, & the WM in their original form but & alsoI love the Kitty!

Look at the original Conrail logo (not the "quality" logo).  Where management saw steel wheels on steel rails, many saw a giant white can opener.
