Hashing out FGEX Reefers
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:29:00 PM »

Starting in the mid 1920's, Norfolk Southern used FGEX reefers to haul potatoes.  In order to model this business in 1947, I need wood reefers with metal roofs and ends.

Since I know of no manufacturer that has a car that meets the above criteria, I figure the route to go is to kitbash, giving me the chance to get a fairly close match.

Research sources:  the FGEG booklet put out by PRRTHS, B&OHS, etc., the Jack Delano Library of Congress collection, and the two NS books.

Abbreviation corrected to FGEX for Fruit Growers Express

So far, it looks like the basis for most of these cars will be Atlas reefer sides and hatches with sides and roofs from the 1932 AAR boxcars.

Underframes will vary from car to car.

The idea is to build two or three unique cars.

Belcross, NC:

Camden, NC:

One of the 'semi-rebuilds,' receive a steel sill and roof, but retain truss rods and wood ends:

Just to give an idea as to how many potatoes were moved by NS during the 1940's:

Elizabeth City, NC

I'm really confused too... are the pictures you're showing different from what you're asking for?  Cause Intermountain makes those cars in your photos...

DOH!  Forgot all about Intermountain.

Ok, so now the project is just the underframes.

Looks like a neat project.  Looks like you'll be needing a lot of figures to provide all that man power!

I don't know what you were trying to say about rebuilt, semi-rebuilds, steel ends, etc.  But, this .pdf should help clean up a few facts:

Is it good or bad that he already knew about that?  :)

Ah, good call.  In that case I'll include the link to the Seaboard Coastline Modeler which was also part of that issue.
