The live oak in the previous shot is the one along the straight-a-way where the line comes in at the upper left above.  A great shady spot to railfan.      BTW, this shot was taken in May, note how the grass on the north slopes is still green, and the oaks are mostly on the north side too.

I'm also going to experiment with it for those specific detail trees that are prominent. Grabbed my bowl of sawdust last week when we got together to build modules. I'll have to order some of that Silflor evergreen material.

Heading off to the florist to get that wire right now...

My local Michaels craft store had the 16, 20, 22 & 24 gauge florist wire in stock (Panacea brand stem wire), so I picked them up along with an additional stop at Home Depot for some free sawdust  ;D. The larger pine on the right has a 16 gauge center with 24 gauge wrappings, & the one on the left has a 20 gauge core w/ 24 gauge windings. The 20 gauge core is about the thinnest I can use while still keeping the trunk straight while doing the winding part. The two green ones on the left show the basic frame when you start out. I'd like to also try some 18 gauge wire when available.





Per Jos instructions on Railroad-Line, you have to sieve the sawdust (I also purchased a small tea strainer) to get suitable n scale texture material. The only aquarium filter sheets that looked even close to what he showed in the tutorial were sourced at PetSmart (Rena brand Micro Filtration +), but I haven't glued any on yet. Might go back to Michaels and look for poly fil instead of the filter sheet I have now. So far my total cost = $21.00 but I could easily get 20-30 fore ground quality trees out of this material. Warning...be prepared for lots of winding & twisting of wire if you want to try these.

Paul, I'm using some thick music wire for my cores.  Difficult, but possible to bend.

Don't forget to cover the tree with the plaster mixture.
