Canadian National was owned by the Canadian government for over 70 years.

It was formed over 1918-23 through mergers of several bankrupt railways and other government controlled railways (Grand Trunk, Canadian Northern, Grand Trunk Pacific, Intercolonial, National Transcontinental, etc.) and controlled by the government until privatized in the early 1990s.
