At its zenith, Brooklyn Rapid Transit Co. was the nation's largest streetcar operator, with 5,000 streetcars and over 500 miles of line. The end came on October 31, 1956, when the last two lines, McDonald Ave. and Church St., which by that time were operated by the New York City Transit Authority, were converted to buses.

There were still three lines operating, including the Coney Island Ave. line, when PCC 1048 was photographed departing the Coney Island Traction Terminal on July 20, 1955.

A view of the Traction Terminal, with PCC's 1002 and 1021, with Clark Equipment car 1000 in the background. Taken July 20, 1955.

Next week, more Brooklyn in the mid-1950's.

Jeff,
That was last summer. I was along with Sean on that trip. That shot with the SD60s was the last train we saw that day. We were hanging out waiting and were about to leave when we thought we heard prime movers, so we gave it a few more minutes. We were rewarded with sweet light and this pair burst out of the trees. It was a really good day.

If you need tour guides for the Middle Division, let me know.

Maybe a "Railwire Middle Division Weekend" this summer?

SEAN!

I love the middle shot with the two CONRAIL units (saved as background)!
That's one way to make a coal train interesting. I figured there was no way
in Hell NS would repaint all those units by the end of '08 like we were talking
about last fall. Time to plan another PA trip.

Glad you liked it, we're all hoping there is still a good number of blues around once the weather warms up. NS said they were down to about 200 CR paints left back in October, but they have Juniata and Enola working to drop that number every day.
