Using a MrKluke idea from ages ago, I sprayed some future on this car to make it look new.

Here is a slightly less forgiving shot showing slight orange peel:

Looks like you've already got volume 2 of that book series underway.  :)

In my spare moments, when I'm board with weathering, I like to make things weathering-free.

My next book will be on cleaning things up.

Paint the bearing caps blue... unless you're going for a repainted car vs a new car.

If you really want to get cool... decal the reporting mark and number on the truck sideframe...

What is the significance of the blue caps?  Why blue?

Blue bearings are made by Brenco.

Though I don't know for sure, I'm assuming that Robbman knows that Brenco supplies the bearings for these particular cars when new.  I know that Brenco supplies most of the bearings used in new car construction so it's a fair assumption.

Timken, SKF, NSK, Brenco, Hyatt (now known as General Bearing) and Koyo have all manufactured bearings that were eventually painted blue upon installation to the axle.  In other words... the color has nothing to do with who made the bearing assembly, and it isn't applied to the end cap and seal plate as made.  I don't know what it's for... could be a procudere to make sure that only new bearings are applied to new cars (there's an AAR ruling that states you cannot use reconned bearings on new cars).

With all due respect Robbman, freight car wheels are one thing I know a little bit about since I manage the largest freight car wheel plant on the continent and see about a half-million bearings a year.  Knowing your vast expertise on many subjects, I don't doubt that other bearings HAVE been painted blue at some time in the past, but the only bearings that are used today (and for some time) that are blue are New Brenco Class K, Gen 2s, and they come that way from Brenco themselves.

To the best of my knowledge there's no particular reason.  I doubt it has to be with ensuring they're applying new bearings to a new car because plenty of new cars don't get blue bearings.  I'm more inclined to believe it's just a marketing thing for them.
