What i did for the ballast was very cheap and realistic, I went to a small railroad yard near my house with a small bucket and a small shovel and took the fine dust just at the edge of the ballast.

At home I poured everything through a small sieve and then put it then on the trackbed as you would do with commercial ballast.

Another question re S & S ballast.  For N scale how many feet per pound (or quart) of ballast can one expect.
