Weekend Update - 6/22/2008

Another week, another update ..

This week, I completed the wiring on the new addition to the layout. I ran the first test train on Saturday. I wired they new sections for block detection, and will be putting the signal system on the upper deck first.

Started fitting FVM wheels to all my Deluxe NS Woodchip hoppers and was dismayed to find that they have Atlas Trucks, not the Micro-Trains as indicated by the box. Of course I did not have enough spare wheels to fit them all (0.553 axle length seems to work well) but one was done and looks good!

Now if only I could get some Southern ones to go with them......

I continued to plug away at making and scribing parts for my Plastruct swing bridge. Every time I look closely at the plans I see more that has to be made before assembly starts!  :

Looking forward to Louisville next week. Was planning to bring some models for the contests until I read this...

They better be good. I heard Tom Knapp was gonna be there with some of his stuff.

Now I'm not so sure.   :-[

I4s tender, did this whole thing yesterday and it just needs weathering and a resurface to the coal load since the bunker was extended and the gap filled in with Bondo. My Kung Fu is a little rusty still (3 or 4 major mistakes here) but this is a good warmup to getting back to finishing the engine.

IIRC my dad used paint pigments to do the rust effect.

Oooh, will you have the chlorine car for sale there? One buyer here. Might buy some of your tank car loading racks too. Still have not decided how many I need as I've got to build some building kits to see what fits first but know I'll need at least 2 real feet worth.

Not much train-wise for me this week.  I worked all week to push out a preliminary addition design for a client (and for a pay check!) then celebrated by doing pretty much nothing all weekend.

But doing nothing around these parts can be mighty enjoyable.


This remote river beach is about 20 minutes from my house by boat.  Fortunately we have neighbors who are so equipped...

I love living in a place that other people come to for vacations.  You folks on the left side of the bridge might make more coin, but I wouldn't trade this for all the tea in China.

I'm less busy this week, so I'm planning to make some structural steel loads for my flat cars, plus a few other odds and ends, and maybe catch up on my decoder work for some of youse guys.

I'm getting things ready for the convention.  I took all of this week and most of next week off, so I have tomorrow and Tuesday to finish up my various projects.






Dismal Swamp RR flatcar, scratchbuilt from scrap cedar scrounged at the NC Maritime Museum's boat shop with a little copper and stainless wire for detail.  Trucks are MT.  From what I can tell from the photos, these cars had no numbering.  The passenger car the railroad owned also had no lettering.  I have been unable to find any photographs of the road's boxcar, so for now at least I'm going to cheat for it and use the MT box.

Been continuing to work on the Canadian Pacific "Dominion" consist.......this week's topic... heavyweight sleepers.

Not much you can do except detail em and employ the 3 foot rule.... a few well placed paying passengers help.....

Long time no post...and not much work done in the train department.

I did come closer to completion on my Spectrum/ Standard bash Reading I-10. I still need to work the tender some more, get the headlight to work, and add/ remove some odds and ends. The major achievement was cleaning off the bench, and getting this thing to do circles (well) on the track!
