Some Hawaii Photos

I took a 2 week vacation to Hawaii .. while there, I had the opportunity to take a couple of railroad photos ..

John, that yellow 4-4-0 and the red ?? pulling the open passenger cars don't look like anything the OR&L nor the Navy operated on Oahu, are they operated by the museum?

There were quite a few Diesels operated by the OR&L prior to abandonment in 1947, the GE looks like one of them. There's a big article in Kalmbach's The Railroads In World War II, on the OR&L. There's one shot of a bunch of sailors headed for the beach packed into gondolas. That's better than the conductor, he's riding on the end beam of the last car, hanging on the the brake wheel for dear life!

The red and yellow Americans were at the Dole Plantation .. tourist ride .. little gas engine ..

Considering the volcanoes, typhoons, and of course Gilligan trying to power it all with a bicycle and a couple of coconuts, I'd say it looks pretty good!

The biggest surprise to me was the French gratitude train car .. there were one for each state .. Here is the list of known locations of the rest of the cars .. http://www.mercitrain.org/

It is owned by the Legion in Hawaii .. they have hopes of restoring it some day .. but .. at the rate it looks to be deteriorating, its doubtful
