This week, some more photos of the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee taken in June of 1959.

Passenger compartment end of combine 256. Note the typical interurban features like the roof mat to prevent damage from a dewired trolley pole, the rounded end with anticlimber, and the radial coupler. These cars had to navigate the sharp curves on the Chicago "L".


Combine 256 is getting a wash at the South Milwaukee shops.


Coach 742 leads a three car train awaiting departure to Chicago at the Milwaukee terminal. Note the inspection pit under the departure track. This is one of the cars that got the "shadow corrugations" after World War II.


Next week we'll still be riding the North Shore.

Keep 'em comin......This week I scanned in some pics for another forum from my July/August 1978 travels in Indonesia.

The F class were a 2-12-2T design built between 1912 and 1920 by Hanomag and by Werkspoor. This one, at Solok in West Sumatra was thought to be the last active example. Unfortunately the day we were there was a public holiday and it hardly moved.



This 0-10-0T is one of 34 that were used on the West Sumatran rack system based around Padang Panjang. There were pre and post war types - this pic is of one of the post war examples, built in Japan as late as 1967.
 


There were a variety of Mallets built for use in Indonesia. The last active mainline examples were a handful of CC50 class (built 1927) based at Cibatu in Western Java.



There were 100 of the D52 2-8-2s built by Krupp in 1951 and these always seemd to be kept clean by their crews. All had an impressive Krupp builder's plate on the smokebox.

Wes, did those "ear flaps" with the stars on them that are found beside the headlight on many Indonesian steam locomotives have any purpose, or were they just decoration? I've always wondered.  ???

Is that a 0-12-0T or does the driver have to touch the rail to be counted?  ;D

Gregg, how did those mats protect against a pole that's come loose? Wouldn't the pole jump UP, not down?

Yeah, it'll jump up until it hits a bracket or a crosspan wire, which will slap it down onto the roof HARD. Hit something hard with something sprung at 80 MPH and you'd see what I'm referring to. I never saw it happen, but that's what I've been told.

I rode behind that Steam Special in '77.  My Dad got passes from his buddies at the railroad for a "customer appreciation" trip to Harpers Ferry.  We rode out on the DC/Metropolitan line and came back on the old Main.  Dropped us off at HF then went on to Martinsburg to turn on a wye.  Took forever to get back.  We were supposed to be in HF for 2 hours, ended up there for almost 6.  Never did learn what the hang up was.

Bob, as I recall, the trip we took was on a Sunday... I might have been on that train!  It was a little overcast, too... the colors in your picture match those I remember that day.

The trip I took was from Wash, DC via the B&O to Philadelphia and return.  Actually keep on time both ways.  Wish I would have taken a photo of the crossing in Phila where the trolley line and the B&O cross.  Think it's the only place in the USA where this happens.

The WM crossed a street car line at Arlington, I think it was Belvedere Ave.  That ended when street car service did in the early 60's.
