I started with a factory painted Kato BNSF C44-9W. the front (steps, porch, ditchlights, handrails) and the trucks are from an undecorated Kato AC4400CW. some Tenax-7R, some paint, decals and detail parts later...

I certainly do, there are more in the make, I found five more, B and C engines...   ;D

...it's a dark wash (stronger than the wash for the whole engine) made with Methylated Spirits (Brennsprit   ) and Tamiya Black - applied with a microbrush (let it dry and do the same step again till it's dirty enough)

Another method for the grills would be using a wash of India Ink (applied with a Microbrush like Steve mentioned).  I used this method on the SD70MAC below; simply wipe the excess away before it dries.
