Phil, it's inside, using a similar lighting setup described in that article I did a few years back for NSR.  I just positioned the spotlight to get a tad bit of reflection to get somewhat of a hint of a metallic surface.

I agree these are great. I got one of the VTR ones when they came out. Unfortunately most roads are sold out most places I check.

I really like them too.  My only complaint (minor) is that the couplers are kind of high.  They don't line up well with my other rolling stock.  These are the only cars I've ever had to shim when swapping in MT couplers.

Why not just use the Atlas friction bearing caboose trucks on these? Wouldn't those be a better choice for a NE caboose? I know they are for the LV versions.

Nope, the CNJ cabooses were on Andrews, but lighter looking than the MT versions.
