Weekend Update 2-17-2008

It's totally the wrong scale, but this weekend I was in Morgantown, WV, where I met up with my friend Eric Hansmann, a member of the Mon Valley Model Railroad Club, located in downtown Morgantown.  This is my second visit to the club, and they've really made a lot of progress on their HO scale, operations oriented layout.







That's me on the right with Eric, sharing a chuckle and taking in the scenery...

If you're ever in the Morgantown area (about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh, by the way) I highly recommend stopping into the club.  It's on Pleasant Street right downtown, and they meet on Thursday night.  Tell 'em Lee sent ya.

Finally i have something to post...

Benchwork for a small modular switching layout was built today, leg structure still to be decided on but at least i have 8'x1' of real estate to play with.

Received my Key PRR H8sa 2-8-0  this week. Checked it out on my 2x4 layout and it runs beautifully. It has an MTL coupler on the tender, have to figure out how to add one to the pilot.

Have been running around to doctors - spent a night in a sleep clinic (horrible experience). The oxygen level in my blood is low and it makes me tired all the time so I haven't spent much time upstairs.  :'(  OTOH, they don't seem in a hurry about it so guess it's not life threatening.

My dad's been fighting with that process for, I believe, 12 years, but I think he's finally succeeded. I'm sure he'll be glad to explain what he did if you want to shoot him an email.

Not quite finished and I have managed to lose the front door for the middle store.If you need an ID they are DPM kits siameezed(SP) together like the Walthers Merchants Row.

A small railway office and speeder shed I'm working on in HO for my club's layout. The prototype location, and therefore this small structure are featured in one corner of the layout. Finished all the walls, now I need to make roofs for them.

I don't have pics yet, but I've been working on detailing and detail painting a Kato SD40 that's been pieced together with an old mech and a new shell. I hadn't really liked the Kato blue, but now that I look at it next to an Atlas GP40-2, it doesn't look too bad. I guess ye olde black wash will solve any more issues.

Finally had success at getting my layout controlled using JMRI via Linux....now leave it alone Phill!!

In spite of a great deal of thought and careful planning, I ended up with a corner on my latest layout that challenged my reach.  I had to use a paint brush with a 12" handle just to paint the benchwork there so, doing scenery seemed to be almost out of the question.  I'm sure it's not an original idea by any stretch of the imagination but, an inspiration came to me to cut a piece of foam the size of the area I wanted to scenic, take it to the kitchen table and do the scenery, and then (when satisfied) make one single reach to put it in place.  I put the finishing touches on it last week, too late to get it into last week's week-end report.

Started work on the West Valley Lines SP Fresno-Kerman. The present layout is on the other side of the room and parts will be absorbed into the new layout. fellow RAILWIRE LDE'ers are helping me on another thread (LDE SP). Using 10' shelf brackets to support 1'x6' pine shelfing with 1" foam. Pretty much it.
