ok, question, does anybody know which handrail/walkway part Atlas did reuse for the GP15-1 ?

Steve,
I asked Cory this and he said the only parts they are using from
stock items is the cab.

thank you - so it must be easier to assemble the engine if they use the "old" handrail/walkway system ?

EDIT: I went thru my parts, the sill and handrail/walkway looks like the one for the GP35 !

Not really Steve , here are the pics side by side , the GP35 look longer , the raised portion have 7 stanchions on the GP35 while the lower portion have 2 stanchions  :

Wouldn't also make sense that if they were to be one in the same, that they would just use the existing GP-35 drive?  Aside from the shorter fuel tank, there must also be a difference in wheelbase or something that would justify re-tooling a drive.  I think it would be obvious that a new drive would require a new walkway casting.

As per this site ( some have had doubt of the acuracy in the past with this site ) nothing is the same lenght as a GP15-1 , at first I thought a MP15DC would have been similar but it's too short , then I checked the GP-7/9 without luck , it's about a foot too long in every dimension ...

coupler face      end plates    bolster C/L
MP15DC      48' 8"              44' 6"             24' 2"
GP15-1       54' 11"            50' 9"             29' 9"
GP7 ph. I    55' 11"              52'                 31'

I always found that shocking, you'd think EMD would use standard components. But I guess in doing so, it's the way you arrange them that makes all the difference.

Louis, did you happen to see the measurements on an F unit?

The site do not provide any dimension for F units , the F must be close if M4D want to do a CF7 body to fit over a GP15-1 !
Thanks ,

Ed,

I don't have my reference material with me at the moment (at the local steel mill) so I am working from memory.

IIRC the F units had a bolster centerline dimension of 30'. Needless to say a F unit mech isn't suitable for a CF7 but the GP15-1 at 29'9" is going to be less than 0.5mm out.

From my office window I can see the switcher pulling coil cars out of the rolling mills - they will be on tonight's train to the port of Tauranga.

The CF-7s used fabbed frames if I remember correctly, so the lenth and truck centers will be different.

What do I need to measure Lee? Too bad I didn't know yesterday, I was in Federalsburg.

Personally, I'll take Mark's word on this one.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Ed!    ;)
