Jeebus, in one six month period we've gone from never having that N&W scheme on an N scale boxcar to three varietys of said 50 footers!

(Atlas/Train Man Double Door 50, Atlas/Trainman Single Door 50, and now Athearn PS 50' DD)

For the price Athearn is asking, Robb has a point ...

Mmmm.  Trainman quality at a Micro Trains price...  I believe it's written in scripture somewhere that Thou Shalt Not Sell Thy Boxcars for more than $10..."

Can someone tell if this is former MDC tooling?  If so, why the steep price?

I expect there will be great piles of these accumulated that will be sold off below $10 within a year.

Those Jewell cases are expensive, Lee!  ;D

You're not comparing apples to apples in Trainman to Athearn. Atlas paid for the Trainman tooling years and years ago. Athearn (Horizon) purchased MDC only a few years ago, so I am sure they are still paying for that line in 21st century dollars that will be amortized over who knows how long into the future. Sucks to be them.

OUCH! 15 bucks! Convenient that I won't be buying any. I MIGHT consider them for less than 10. I still have lots of other freight cars that I want that I AM willing to pay over 10 for.

As I recall, $11 bucks was what MDC was charging for this car.  I guess that this tooling would be MDC's last release?  So you get better printing and new couplers for the extra $4.

My complaint was that the roofwalks would bow upwards.  I've noticed that Athearn now uses a tacky glue for roofwalks to allow for expansion/contraction.

Psssst... Atlas has NEWLY TOOLED cars in the Trainman line...

Pssst..They bought that tooling for a song!!! It's not NEW tooling.

And just for the record, I am by no means advocating the price of the Athearn models. I do think they are a bit high, but I also think there are factors that go into this equation that go well beyond what any of us really know.

I agree with Lee in that once you get past the $10.00 price point for a box car, you'd better have something good to show for it.

You could be right, I'm not really sure. MDC released so many products. The info I got from Athearn seemed to focus on the plastic jewel case and not the model. You'd think they reinvented the wheel!
