NS SD70

Do anybody know of anybody who has made a model of a Conrail or NS SD70?

I believe Overland used to make them but i am thinking it may be possible to do one with a Kato or Athearn SD70MAC or SD70M body with the addition of a spartan cab?

Any ideas?

it's a bit complicated. I'll wait for Robbman to answer this.

Athearn made one in HO:

I dug this 5 year old post up on the Atlas forum:

Robbmann wrote:

The cab on a SD70MAC is an isolated cab just like the 80MAC ( which, BTW, on the 80MAC and 70MAC models, makes it easier to do different variations in the headlight and numberboards ) A SD70 has a standard EMD cab a la SD60. The SD70M has a non-isolated cab that has a few variations ( when NS recieves it's next 33 SD70M's, I can post a comparison )

Also the SD70MAC that Kato is doing should more aptly be called a Phase 2 SD70MAC, as is uses HTCR II trucks with 45" wheels ( a la the SD80MAC ) and has the aforementioned isolated cab.

SD70's use a HTCR truck with 42" wheels. The sideframe is also a little bit different than a HTCR II

more info from the Robbman encyclopedia:

Quote
Measurements are for the centerlines of the bolsters ( or pivot points for the HTCRs ) , to get the wheelbase ( center to center on the trucks ) add 2.5"

SD50/60/60M/60I are all 45' 7.5" bolster centers.

All but the SD60M are 67' pilot to pilot, and 71'2" over couplers.

The SD60M is 67' 5" pilot to pilot, and 71' 7" over couplers.

These all have 40" wheels...

SD70/70M/75M/75I are all 46" 0.7" bolster centers ( note that EMD went metric from this series on ( finally ) thus the odd Imperial measurement...

They are all 68' 2" pilot to pilot, and 72' 4" over couplers.

These have 42" wheels

The SD60/70MAC are all 47' 8.7" bolster centers.
They are all 69' 10" pilot to pilot, and 74' over couplers.

These also have 42" wheels

Also pricey, if you price out the shells and such.

Rob, can these be done with a Athearn SD70M and an Atlas SD60? I would think that would be a bit more cost effective.

I did a break down on cost between Athearn/Atlas & Kato
Now Assuming you can get shells from Athearn (which you would need)
I wouldn't know what they would cost.

Note: All Prices are full retail

Kato SD70M                                     109.98
Kato SD40-2 Shell (Mid Production)   32.00

Total                                              141.98

Athearn SD70M                                 99.98
Athearn SD70M Shell                          ?????
Atlas SD60 shell            10.00 (really awesome price I must admit)

Total                                               109.98

so for an extra 32 dollars (assuming Athearn's shells are free) you get a more accurate, better looking, better running locomotive.

Very nice work, Steve.  I really like the wind deflectors.  How the heck did you glue them so cleanly?

with no glue at all...  ;)
#80 holes are a little bit tight for the wind deflector mounting legs and so they hold w/o any glue. but the other parts I always glue from the inside.
