One thing I found interesting about this discussion, and mirror discussions on TB and Atlas, is a change in how critical we have become of 1/160 models.  Back in early 2003 when the "BNSF Executive" Kato SD70MAC's were released, I posted photos showing how poor the paint was on these units.  The photos were around HO scale in size on the screen depending on your resolution.  I was BLASTED for posting such large photos (2X actual size).  Now, in this instance almost exactly five years later, not a SINGLE comment was made regarding photos that, on a couple of different displays I've used over the past few days, are CLEARLY HO scale sized and perhaps a little larger.  (EDIT: There was a comment or two since I wrote this, for the record)

Maybe it was because Kato is/was "untouchable"?

I'm not trying to defend Intermountain here.  I think probably the body issues and the fuel tank are just stupid mistakes if you are in this business.  (I don't know the specifics on these though, so I'm not certain of the severity of the issues)  I did think the paint on the body itself looked OK, and I agree the handrails looked horrid...but I'd be curious to see an Atlas and/or Kato unit with a similar CSX paint job just for comparison, at that same level of magnification.  It seems white and yellow handrails typically end up "thick". CSX would be the last scheme I would do right out of the chute, that's for sure.

Anyway, I'm not trying to stop the bash fest...carry on!  I guess I'm just bitter.  hehe

I think some of you guys spend too much time laying on the floor with your engines right next to your faces, probably pushing them back and forth and making "vroom vroom" sounds...

So .. start with an Atlas SD50 frame, and throw the rest away?

SD50s are longer than SD45-2s ;)

Except for the SD50S.  ;)

Ok I really want a pair of 45-2's so I guess I'll have to live with them...

How do IM shells scale out? Would Atlas Or Kato Parts match? (width wise)
I'm thinking keep the long hood and toss the rest.

Now how easy (or hard) is it to get these shells apart?

(Oh and for the record I don't go Vroom when I play with my trains. :( (I go Chuga Chuga Chuga ;D)

I know I do... :-[

Yes Kato is still putting off the diet, at least with the latest SD40-2. (Not Sure about the AC4400 & SD70's)

Kato's will be wide as long as they stick with the current motors.

Wow though on the duct gap on the IM SD45-2! :o (just surfed in from the A forum)

The model in the pictures on the Atlas forum are most certainly of a production model.

Why they chose to use the large fuel tank is beyond me (other than my guess that someone at IRC thinks "big fuel tank" = SD45-2). I blame Erik W . .  . come on out and take your medicine like a man Erik.

Whoa there cowboy!  I can't take credit for this one.  I've been gone from IMRC for 2 years now.  They were just starting the never ending process of cutting and recutting the molds for this when I left.

I blame Frank . . . for running the company in such a stellar fashion.

Definition of blamestorming (blām'stôr'mĭng):

1. (n.) A method of collectively finding one to blame for a mistake no one is willing to confess to. Often occurs in the form of a meeting of colleagues at work, gathered to decide who is to blame for a screw up.

Chicken sh$% -- Matt says hi by the way.  I know, let's blame him . . . he doesn't know anything about CSX engines.  ;D ;D

Seriously, looks like they found the box of large fuel tanks left over from the last tunnel motor run and figured they should use them.  It's an easy problem to fix the fuel tanks (they have the correct ones . . . ) but it's one more thing that takes fixing and cuts into the bottom line.  . . . I wonder what it would look like if that place actually had operating budgets.
