We've found that the wider and flatter the railhead, the more likely it will collect crud.
So how many times have you had to to clean that new Z scale layout? That's as flat of a rail as you can get.
Well, it's only flat on the sides; the edges are actually slightly curved, like this:
Since the wire is set on edge, the "railhead" is thus rounded. That said, I only used it for the visible track; the hidden track is all Marklin sectional, which unfortunately has a fat, flat head. But given that the track isn't all done, the layout hasn't had much mileage yet. I anticipate the Marklin track will give me a bit more grief; I'm thankful it's all hidden, so maybe I'll be spared some of the effects of gunk buildup.
