When you say that the Sophisticated Finishes stuff is too textured for HO, do you mean the pitting and other effects don't fit the car?  Is it too "big" for the scale, I guess I'm asking.  I'm new to N scale and I'm curious what I'll have to go for with rust on some covered hoppers, so if the Sophisticated Finishes won't work with HO, I'm assuming N scale is out of the question.

More or less.  I'm happy with the way the top came out, but not the sides.  I'll try it again, and maybe use it a little more sparingly applied with a foam brush.

Okay, what am I missing here.  What do you do with the rusty steel wool?  Where can I read more about these great ideas everyone is talking about so I don't have to be so in the dark and feel as green as I am.  Thanks for putting up with this newbie.

Hi Dave:

I haven't posted an example using rusty steel wool, but I'm sure that others have.  This car uses Sophisticated Finishes as a rust base.  Future iterations of my cars will use rust from a rusty coffee can and the rusty steel wool.  Do some searches here in this forum to pick up some techniques to get you started.

A while back, Shawn Vann took some of my forum postings and created a downloadable PDF:  http://mannresearch.com/rr/shawnvann/tommann_weathering72.pdf .  This will get you started.

Thanks,
I will read this today and I'm planning on getting a start this weekend, if I can keep the my wife busy enough so I can spend enough time to get started.  I know it's a slow start because I need to get my work area set-up and slowly get situated.

Dave
