I went to charlottsville VA  on sunday. there was an Amtrak pulling out when we got there but other than that there were no trains. :'( but I did get some cool Autumnall(spelling??) shots.

Damn tin-platers... No respect for prototypical fidelity!


And the smoke units... enough to choke a horse!

But while I was there, I was able get a great shot of a very elusive breed... quite a find!  The fellows down at the Audubon Society will be clamoring for this shot....

More bulldogs from down under......

Last Sunday a special train was operated to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Spirit of Progress from Melbourne to Albury using a consist composed entirely of original 1937 carriages. I was fortunate enough to go along for the ride. The locos are maintained by the Seymour Rail Heritage Centre north of Melbourne - occasionally they venture out on hire for general revenue work with other train operators. BTW this is on broad gauge 5'3".

Beautiful photos Wes.
I'll bet when Chris sees the photos he'll consider sending a magnetic sign with the Erie diamond to place over the circular VR shield.   ;D

Nothing of interest regarding the paint scheme but I like the locos beneath the paint.



The last of these were recently retired at Bellevue. 


I had completely forgotten about this scheme until I came across this slide.  A colorful paint scheme N&W style

Wes, the station in the second photo looks like a fascinating Victorian era structure (on Victoria Railways no less!). Got any shots of the building itself?

Yes it was but I don't think it was 5' 3".  Wider I believe.  Goggle will tell all I'm sure.

Erie was built as 6'.  That' why they later had a road used by shippers for high and wide loads - plenty of room on their right-of-way.

The best part of those black locomotives it the blue tint they have just like Erie's did.  ;D

The Atlantic & Great Western line through Warren Ohio was 6' gauge, it interchanged with the standard gauge Cleveland and Mahoning on the West side of town. (Both RRs became the Erie) So they laid a 3rd rail from Warren to Cleveland for interchange purposes. Then they laid more 3rd rail through Warren to and into PA so they could interchange tank cars full of oil.  Turns out by the time they went standard gauge most of the line was 3 rail.

There were articles in the Warren newspaper about the costs of laying the 3rd rail through town.
