HO scale Railbox

Wait, let me explain...

...this started out as an Intermountain Railbox car, but I goofed it up trying to follow Mr. Humps photo and had to strip it down.  This allowed me to use a rust base coat for some interesting effects, so I'm happy the original idea didn't turn out.  The roof is the Sophisticated Finished kit with 4-5 coats of the activator.  The yellow graf is hand painted, and the head graf is a decal made from real AWARE graffiti.  The anti-graffiti article in trains a year ago got me interested in AWARE and other 'famous' graf 'artists'.

I like the texture you achieved, and use of the various shades. It’s pleasing to the eye (at least mine)

Is this from a proto shot? If so could you share?

Rust-coloured paint, or did you do the "finish" on the car and then paint the blue?

A coat of Krylon rusty metal primer followed by polyscale rust and black dusted on.

It's based on a shot that I took a year ago at Altoona.  John was there, he might have the same photo. :)

How did you do the peeling paint? (sea salt?) Its amasing the effects you can get in the larger scales...
It looks like there's multiple layers of paint!

Can't wait to see a CF7!

Yes, sea salt it is.   ;D  Next time, I'm going to try to crush it up to see if it works in N and Z scales.

Tom, this one is simply jaw-droppingly astounding, probably your very best job so far. The closeup could easily pass for the real thing.

That is a doggone great car Tom-excellent rusting effects. Those CUOH cars are
great candidates. I see quite a few on the "siding" here in town, but lately they've
been newer ones with no weathering, just tagging. Most of them are Seicos as your
proto pic, but to my knowledge (& anyone is free to correct me on this since I'd like to
know & save me some kitbash time) the only available Seico is the Athearn Genesis car,
but it has dreadnaught ends.

Tom,

The WOW factor is way up there!!!!!  :o :o

So rather than crushing sea salt, can't you just use table salt?

No, table salt is cube shaped.

I was working on an article about macro photography and what you need to keep in mind so that a model looks good under the "unforgiving glass".

As in thin?  None, just used it straight and took care not to get brush strokes.
